With more countries opening their borders to receive visitors, you may be able to make that trip you put off because of the coronavirus travel restrictions. Most people who want to travel are still uncertain about the requirements they need to meet to have a successful trip. Amongst other things, you might need to get a private COVID test before your departure.
Before you can travel, you need to have a fit-to-fly certificate, showing that you do not have the coronavirus. Although the COVID-19 test for travel is a known travel requirement, there are still some uncertainties surrounding international travels because the COVID-19 travel regulations differ between countries, and they are continuously changing.
For this reason, ensure you stay updated with the travel requirements of your travel destination by always checking their official website for information. You might need to get a COVD-19 PCR test to show that you do not have the virus. The travel requirement may also involve getting your fit-to-fly certificate from an accredited laboratory.
How does the testing work?
You may decide to visit an accredited testing centre to get your test done or order for the swab kit online. If you order for the test kit, the company will send it to you by post with the instructions on how to correctly take your sample. After you take the sample, you would send it to the laboratory to be analysed.
Your result should be available 24 – 48 hours after your sample arrives at the laboratory. Some testing centres may email the result of the test to their patients.
Other travel requirements
In addition to the standard travel documents like your passport, you need to have your negative COVID-19 test result. You also need Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure your safety.
Ensure you wear your face mask or shield, and if you can, also wear gloves and goggles. Although wearing your mask and following certain COVID-19 guidelines may not offer you a 100% protection, it serves as a precautionary measure.
Presently, you may not be able to board any flight or enter an airport without wearing your facemask. Some airlines penalise passengers who fail to wear their face masks. You may want to pack your snacks and have your personal blanket and earpiece to avoid using those provided by the airline. Having disinfectant wipes will also help you disinfect surfaces on the aeroplane before touching them.
Recommendation for personal hygiene during air travel
- Ensure you adhere to these COVID-19 travel guidelines.
