You will find many articles, forums, and blogs on Fibromyalgia and Magnesium Deficiency out there. Those of us that have Fibromyalgia might be Magnesium Deficient. If we are not now, we could develop it later.
What exactly is magnesium and why is it important for our bodies?
Magnesium supports the normal function of nearly every organ in the body, especially the heart and kidneys. Magnesium also plays a vital role in transmitting electrical impulses from the nerves to the muscles. Nerve impulses stimulate the muscle cells, causing the internal structure of the cell known as the sarcoplasmic reticulum to release calcium ions. This action triggers the muscle cell to contract. Magnesium ions, found in the fluid portion of the cell, then produce an electrical charge that propels the calcium back into that internal structure, which allows the muscle cell to relax. A magnesium deficiency can disrupt this process and interfere with normal nerve conduction and muscle contraction.
Another key function of magnesium is to help regulate blood pressure. This is important for women that are 40+ who may already be at risk for high blood pressure due to age. Deficiencies have been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and inflammation. It also helps the body to absorb calcium, which as stated above plays a role in muscle, nerve and heart function, as well as blood glucose control. Magnesium is considered an essential vitamin for women over 40.
Here are just a few signs of a magnesium deficiency.
- Calcium deficiency
- Poor heart health
- Weakness
- Muscle Cramps
- Tremors
- High blood pressure
- Respiratory issues
- Nausea
- Tremors
- Anxiety
- Difficulty swallowing
- Poor memory
Your doctor can test your magnesium levels if you think you might be deficient. If you are eating a balanced, healthy diet, you might already be getting enough magnesium. For a woman 40 and up the recommended dose is 320 mg a day.
