I chose Socks for Supper as a blast from the past book by Jack Kent because when I was little I used to read this book over and over again. I don’t know if it was the simple explanation of the improvising or the eloquent look at the old couple’s poverty, but I loved this book. I might have actually stolen it from my parents when I moved out because I noticed my mom’s name is on the inside, shhh.
Kent describes an elderly couple who live in poverty in a tiny, broken down house with a turnip garden, all they ever eat is turnips. They live near a couple with a cow and they dream of milk and cheese. The old couple trade socks for milk and cheese. When they want more, the old woman knits more socks from the old man’s sweater, this keeps going until the old man has no sweater left, but it all works out in the end. A great look at bartering, working together, and sharing, this book has simple pictures that highlight the themes in the book well. I love the pictures showing the old man’s sweater slowing getting smaller and smaller.
