Advancing through Autism: Introductions

Advancing through Autism: Introductions

Oct 17, 2016, 8:06:24 PM Opinion

Autism is defined as follows: a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterised by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts. Autism is much more common than many people think. There are around 700,000 people in the UK living with autism. I am one of them.

My name is Ben Attwood. As of 2016, I have been blogging for 4 years on my own website If you Ask Me. I mainly discuss society in general through that blog, and my views on culture, news, technology, and anything that interests me. I wrote 3 blog posts about my Autistic spectrum condition, and a lot of people seemed to enjoy them. When My Trending Stories asked if I would like to blog on their website, I decided to write about my experiences living with Autism.

'Advancing through Autism' intends to show people what life is like through my eyes living with ASD. It will not be a definitive guide for people with autism, nor will it be the definitive guide for parents, teachers, or anyone who knows someone with the condition. The problem is that ASD is a very broad term for a number of different conditions, with similar traits. It is an umbrella term, rather than a single condition, so take anything I say with a grain of salt, as it won't speak for everyone with the condition. But I do hope it will help people understand the condition a lot better than they may do.

I intend to post twice a week, though I may take the occasional break if there's a family event or a holiday coming. With all that said, I'd like to say a little about myself.

My name is Ben Attwood. I was born on April the 8th 1997, in Whiston which is near Liverpool, UK. Until I was 18, I lived permanently with my Mum, Dad, and my brother Sam. Nowadays, I'm based out of Ormskirk with my Grandad and Uncle, as I am currently studying History with Politics at Edge Hill University.

Outside of blogging, I run a debating website, I collect coins, watch movies, listen to music, and write poetry. Some of these poems I may post on here from time to time. When I get out of University, I'm looking to work in education, as a History or Politics teacher in High School and/or Sixth Form.

I was diagnosed with Dyspraxia at the age of 5, and when I was 15, I was confirmed to have autistic spectrum condition. I always had an idea that I had Asperger's or something, and I was right. These days, I try to support disability causes, and I have ran for the role of Disabled Student's Officer in University. I came second in the election.

I hope that this post gives you an idea of who I am and what I intend to do on here, and I will be making my first Advancing with Autism post later this week. I hope you find my posts interesting, and I hope that you give me feedback.
