Psychological Thriller

Newlyweds Alice and Jake are a picture-perfect couple. Alice, once a singer in a well-known rock band, is now a successful lawyer. Jake is a partner in an up-and-coming psychology practice. Their life together holds endless possibilities. After receiving an enticing wedding gift from one of Alice’s prominent clients, they decide to join an exclusive and mysterious group known only as The Pact.

The goal of The Pact seems simple: to keep marriages happy and intact, and most of its rules make sense: Always answer the phone when your spouse calls. Exchange thoughtful gifts monthly. Plan a trip together once per quarter. . . .

Never mention The Pact to anyone.

Alice and Jake are initially seduced by the glamorous parties, the sense of community, their widening social circle of like-minded couples--and then one of them breaks the rules. The young lovers are about to discover that for adherents to The Pact, membership, like marriage, is for life, and The Pact will go to any lengths to enforce that rule. For Jake and Alice, the marriage of their dreams is about to become their worst nightmare.

I was super excited to read The Marriage Pact after hearing nothing but great things about it and reading the intriguing blurb. After reading the book, I am left with mixed feelings.

The idea of The Marriage Pact and its characters were original and intriguing. Plus,  I really liked Jake as a narrator. Most narrators are female, so reading an entire book from a male perspective was a nice change.  At times Jake's thoughts could end up on a tangent that I felt was unnecessary and didn't really add to the plot. If his thoughts had been a bit more controlled, I feel like the book would have been paced better. The story was slow to start and even after it picked up Jake's tangents could cause what felt like a lull. Overall, I enjoyed the book and once I was about a third of the way through, I couldn't put it down.

I voluntarily received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Just a Few Pact Rules

"Knowing the rules and regulations provides a clear, defined map and lights the path to happiness."

"When your spouse calls, always answer."

"Every member is required to provide one gift to his or her spouse each calendar month."

"Each member must plan one joint trip each quarter."

"You must always remain within five percent of your weight on the day of your wedding."
