A very common question we get asked as ministers is “how do I know the will of God for my life?” Some even believe God doesn’t speak to them at all and they end up running around asking other people what they should do rather than God.
In Old Testament times, they did not have the indwelling Holy Ghost. To speak to God the Israelites needed to go through their High Priest or if they wanted to hear from God they needed a Prophet. However we live in a different dispensation. We now have the Holy Spirit living inside of us. Take a look at this verse.
(1Cor 2:9 [KJV])
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
See how the Apostle Paul has wrote “But as it is written”. He did this because he was quoting from the book of Isaiah. Now they did in-fact live in this reality as they did not individually walk with the Spirit of God. Many sometimes still quote this verse in Corinthians and say “well sometimes we just don’t know what God is going to do with us”. This is incorrect, let’s read the following verse.
(1Cor 2:10 [KJV])
But God hath revealed [them] unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
The Spirit of God does in fact want to reveal to us His plans and will for our lives. This is why He sent us His Spirit. God Himself is now our counsellor, we don’t have to run to man, we can go to God directly. This was the whole purpose of Paul even quoting this verse to the Corinthian Church, to teach them that we now DO have the Holy Ghost with us. Perhaps the Corinthians needed reminding of this fact just as we do today. Well you might ask, “how come I don’t hear Him, and how do I be led of Him?
The only way to know God is to regularly fellowship with Him in His Word (the Bible) and prayer (speaking to God and declaring His Word out in the open). There really is no other way to get intimate with Him. Make your walk with God a journey. Wake up every day and ask Him to guide you. Don’t make decisions without first seeking God for them. Sometimes we will hear the still small voice of God and other times He will lead us through peace. As you regularly fellowship with Him you will begin to learn and discern these ways.
The only way we will get closer to God is by literally “getting closer to God”. I encourage you to put aside some time every morning and I guarantee you that God will begin teaching you what you need to do, and He will reveal Himself to you powerfully. Seek to hear from Him and you will.
There’s no better counsellor than God Himself.
Be blessed
