Prequel novella to Watch Me Rise (August 2016).

Chloe Reed and Nick Grayson couldn’t have more different lives. Where Chloe had a bleak future and was trying to deal with a loss that had left a hole in her heart, Nick was a happy-go-lucky guy, leading a carefree life with a path set.

Until one fateful night, they met and everything changed. The night that gave Chloe hope for the future, left Nick scarred for life. Was their meeting a one-off tryst or was their story just beginning?

Immediately, from the first chapter this book is hard-hitting. I knew it was going to be emotional. It opens with Chloe and her parents wondering where her older brother is. Then, they get a call from a detective saying that they found a body that might be her brother. That, I wasn't expected.

Because of this, Chloe's life falls apart. We don't actually get to see that happen but see the after-effects a year later and then three years later. I'm not going to lie, Chloe is a complete mess a year later. We meet Nick when he saves her from killing herself. It was really hard for me to get through this, I'm not going to lie. It was emotional in a way I wasn't expecting.

"The more emotions you show people, the more insane you'll go."

[Speaking from my experience, I think I need to add a trigger warning. Chloe is suicidal, a self harmer and suffers from depression. This was a slight trigger for me and that's why I'm including this. I didn't know if I was able to read it with what was happening. Thankfully, it didn't get too bad.]

"It is a monster that resides in you."

"Those who have it understand it and those who don't are too busy judging and ridiculing it."

I think this was a really good novella because it was really setting everything up for the actual novel. We learn a little about both Nick and Chloe, get first-hand experience through their eyes and see how they meet for the first time.

It's dual perspective too and I really liked that. We got to see both of their lives unfold. It wouldn't have worked otherwise.

It was really quick to get through and I'm so happy to have had the opportunity to read it. I really enjoyed reading it and can't wait for the full length novel.
