I'm not sure when or why the word "hippie" started having a negative connotation, but it always has for me. Hell for awhile anyone who was happy and not always stressed out irritated me. And somehow that morphed into that person being a hippie.
So why do I think I'm a hippie? I'm not sure, but it seems to be the only term that describes me - at least in my mind.
I don't think the word hippie means what it meant back in the '60s and '70s. Today's hippies - not to be confused with hipsters (I will have to cover that in another post) - don't seem to be as "out there". Or maybe it's just that there are more variations now. In any case, I don't think R.J. and I will ever be part of a commune or peace movement. But there are other things that I associate with hippies with which I can get on board.
- Growing and harvesting my own food
- Having a sustainable lifestyle
- Being a good steward of the earth
I'm sure there's other ideals that will come to me in time, but these are the things that are important to me now. I want to know where my food is coming from and what's been done to it before I eat it. I want to say at the end of the day I did all I could to take care of my family and others.
I want to take responsibility for my life and my happiness.
I don't want to worry anymore about things over which I have no control. My stress levels have been through the roof these past few months - as I'm sure most of you can relate to - but I have to believe there's a better way.
There has to be a better way!
So I have a couple of gardens and I have got to tell you, seeing the first pepper or tomato grow is about the coolest thing in the world! And the craziest part is that all of them grow while I'm not looking. Crazy!!
Anyway, my goal in life now is to buy some land with a fixer-upper on it out in the country, have a garden, and live as simply as I can. Thankfully R.J., my husband is on board with that idea too! If that makes me a hippie, then so be it. I'm beginning to think that isn't such a bad thing.
