Where is God?

“Where is God?” <- This is probably the most asked question by mankind. Lucky for you, I have devoted my life’s work to answering this question in the most theological way possible. And after all this research, I have found the answer that all of humanity has been searching for.

EVERYWHERE!

Whew! I’m glad I got that off my chest. I thought it would NEVER come out.

Well, thank you for reading my first ever blog and I hope this has impacted you greatly. Now, you should have an entirely different view on life from that incredibly intelligent and extensive response.

Alright, I know this is not the answer you were expecting. I bet you’re probably wondering, “This cannot be it. There has to be more… right?”

Yes, that’s right! I couldn’t just leave you there lost about something that is true but requires thorough explanation. Although, it is plausible to say that God is truly everywhere without having to explain further, a deeper approach into the concept and scripture are both required to be able to fully grasp the truth that God is indeed everywhere, especially with all the trouble and terror that we come across daily. Even though times may seem tough, God has, is and will always be present.

In order to better explain this concept of God being everywhere, I must first guide you through a story. Some of you might receive a quick understanding from it while others might not. All I ask is that through it all, you be patient and non-judgmental – without misconceptions or previous thoughts about the topic – and that you take hold of what is being laid out ahead of you.

Last month on the 12th of June, Orlando [Florida] became home to the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history that occurred at Pulse nightclub, capping the death toll at 49 with more than 50 people left injured. This became a very tragic event that shook the city and caught everyone by surprise – Orlando is the self-proclaimed “happiness capital” of the world all thanks to the influence that Walt Disney World has on it. Unfortunately, the weeks after the incident, Orlando no longer seemed to be the happiest place on earth, rather the complete opposite. Instead, sadness was all around, there was pain inside our hearts, and a lot of questions left unanswered. It stayed this way until God began to place His hand on the situation and walk the streets of the City Beautiful.

When we start to look at the situation and search for God, we begin to doubt whether He was ever present in the first place. I know you’re probably wondering where He was during this time of post-tragedy grief because you did not see a “bright light” or God Himself physically walking the streets helping others. All I can say is that He WAS there! No, you probably didn’t see said light, a ghost or even God taking a walk through Downtown lending a hand to those in need along the way. But I DID see Him in action in the following moments of the Pulse attack and He was there.

God showed up in the lives of those who risked themselves to rescuing others still in captivity (Sound familiar? Read John 3:16 for reference). He was there with all the medics and doctors who placed their lives on hold to come in to work day in and day out, performing surgery after surgery in an attempt to save those injured in the attack. He was there with the thousands of people who lined up outside under the hot summer sun to help donate blood for the ones needing it. He was there with the churches that went out to the vigils, memorials and events to pay respect to the lost loved ones while also providing a shoulder to cry on or a friend to talk to. I could be here all day telling you how God was there, along with how He continues to be there in our lives daily but none of us have that kind of time (if you would like to talk about it, contact me and I will be more than happy to keep going with you).

With all that’s going on in the world, I have come to find that the problem as to why we wonder where God is lies in our pursuit of Him throughout our lives. How can we come to find an individual if we are not made aware or familiar with their appearance? Some of us tend to walk through life trying to find God in our path, thinking that He’s dressed in a sharp suit with His hair slicked back and an expensive pair of dress shoes. Yet we find a man in front of us dressed in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt and tell him to get out of the way since we are trying to find God and don’t want to miss Him. The wild part about this is that the individual who we demanded to go away is the very One we have been searching for this entire time. Not once have I read in the Bible about God having the appearance of David Beckham. Instead, Psalm 53:2-3 describes Him differently:

“…He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.”

It is not until we begin to see Jesus for who He really is – not who we want Him to be – that we will start to notice Him working in the world and, most importantly, in us…

As we begin to seek God out and spend time with Him daily, we will start to notice Him and His power in our lives. In scriptures, we see that “since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse (Romans 1:20).” In other words, God has been there all along and has made Himself purposely noticeable to us so that we can know He is with us everywhere we go. Another way in which we can notice God in our everyday life is through keeping an eye out for His qualities and character in the people we encounter daily. Within believers who carry the power and love of God inside, there are qualities that they carry known as the “fruits of the Spirit.” These are as follows: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-26). Those who exhibit these qualities (or “fruit”) properly are those who live out their lives walking like Jesus did and loving like we are intended to. They are known to do God’s handiwork here on earth and to be “Jesus” to others.

I encourage you to seek out God in your life and start to take notice of these qualities in the people we encounter. Because as you do, you will begin to truly see God’s hand at work. Then, you can realize that the answer to the question, “Where is God?” has been in front of us all along.
