Former Mayor of Accra, Nat Nunoo Amarteifio says financing is one of the major challenges facing the creative arts industry in Ghana. Speaking on the topic “BEYOND THE APPLAUSE….THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CREATIVE ARTS” at the 9th edition of Achimota Speaks, the former mayor said, “many artists are obliged to use their personal funds to support their projects” as a result of lack of financial investment in the industry. He attributed this challenge to the notion that, the creative sector is a cultural heritage or hobby with little economic potential.

He, therefore, called for a Creative Industry Council to be created to bring government and the private sector together, to invest in the creative sector. “The aim is to put the creative industries at the heart of the growth agenda. It is something where the district assemblies, as well as the metropolitan assemblies, have a role to play” he said.

“Achimota Speaks” is a monthly symposia designed to share Achimotan thoughts on various aspects of national discourse. This initiative forms part of activities to mark the 90th-anniversary celebration of Achimota School.
