“But I want you to know that it is ok to feel sad or mad and even confused about Grandpa. Even grownups have those feelings. To help us feel better, we can talk about him or look at pictures of him and always remember the fun times we’ve had together. Even though Grandpa died, our love and memories of him will stay with us forever.”

Losing a loved one is never easy, no matter how old you are. Our little ones experience separation and the emotions attached to it, deeper than we do. Children, pure as they are, feel strong emotions such as stress, grief, anxiety, and anger without having a clue of how to express them. Their expression comes in different, at times awkward forms. Therefore, it becomes imperative for parents, teachers, and caretakers to ensure that children under their care learn how to process difficult emotions associated with life-long losses.

Having decent emotional health is an important aspect of developing resilience, self-awareness, and overall contentment in every child’s life. Emotional health is not the same as mental health. According to a licensed psychologist, Juli Fraga, while the two terms are often used mutually, emotional health focuses on being in tune with our emotions, vulnerability, and authenticity.

Good emotional health doesn’t mean you’re always happy or free from negative emotions. It’s about having the skills and the resources to cope with the ups and downs of day-to-day life. Sometimes, even adults cannot figure out a way to cope up with their emotions. It’s only natural for children to feel lost in uncertain situations.

Parents often focus more on the key growth statistics of their children, such as their academic scores, weight, height, food habits, etc., but they miss out on keeping a check on their children’s emotional well being. They forget that it is vital for them to take some time out to boost the emotional health of their children. Tammi Kaufman’s ‘A Heaven Party for Grandpa’ shows how parents can ensure the emotional wellness of their young ones.

Tammi Kaufman’s ‘A Heaven Party for Grandpa’

At 34 years old, Tammi has seen it all when it comes to some of the most daunting experiences of life. What she went through was tough to describe. Harder yet was what her daughter went through along with her. Shaken by such experiences, Tammi put her thoughts into words through her book, ‘A Heaven Party for Grandpa’.

In her book, she shows parents how their behavior and emotions can affect their children. She exhibits how parents should learn to recognize the need to teach their child to cope with the severities of life because life is too short to hide your feelings; you shouldn’t be afraid to say what you feel.

Tammi experienced a whirlwind of emotions along with her daughter when she lost her grandfather, grandmother, and her uncle in just three months. At that time, her daughter, who was still very young to understand the emotional change around her, was experiencing grief for the first time. She kept asking questions like where her grandfather had gone, why did he go, and why she couldn’t go with him. Upset as she was, she even questioned Tammi when she saw her getting back to life and a modicum of normalcy.

Tammi dealt with this sensitive situation and helped her little girl make sense of what was happening. She taught her the most important lesson a parent can teach their child. She taught her how to deal with emotions like grief, anger, and sorrow. Her daughter’s experience with grief inspired Tammi to write a book that would help other children in being prepared to handle the loss of their loved ones. She says:

“Of course, nobody really knows what happens after we die. That’s why I wanted my daughter to have a vision of her grandfather being happy (or at a party), so she felt better even though he is no longer with us.”

We all need a little help in trying times. Lucky for Tammi, she had a supportive family and a group of friends who helped her get through a difficult phase in life. Not only that, many people supported her fully in getting ‘A Heaven Party for Grandpa’ to its final shape. Her loving husband, Jason, stayed by her side and kept her motivated. Her parents Randi and Steve, and family and friends proved to be the best support team anyone could ever have. In addition, Tammi is forever thankful to her beautiful daughter Scarlett Paige, who inspired her to write the book in the first place, and Danielle O'Brien and Stephanie Cutaia, who did exceptional work as the editor and the illustrator of the book.

Nurturing emotional health and well being in children helps them develop positive habits like friendliness, patience, and impulse control. It also helps them with a better understanding of their responsibilities. Good emotional health strengthens a child’s ability to deal with curve balls that life throws at them and helps them grow into mature and healthy adults. ‘A Heaven Party for Grandpa’ is a truly inspiring book for parents who wish to see their children experience every emotion in their life with an open heart.
