Why Path of Exile is the Best ARPG in Existence

Why Path of Exile is the Best ARPG in Existence

One might argue that the Diablo series brought the ARPG genre to light, but despite that, it’s Path of Exile that’s the best ARPG to date.

While some might ready their pitchforks and torches, reason with us for a second here. The Action Role Playing Game (ARPG) genre has since soared into popularity after the time of Diablo 2 and 3. With so many more great games entering the arena such as the Torchlight series, the Divinity series, and Baldur’s Gate among others, gamers are spoiled with the many choices that they have in terms of which ARPG they should play. These days, nothing is as dangerous as a time-consuming diversion that comes in the form of a good ARPG, and we’re ready to defend our case that Path of Exile deserves that top spot. With a sprawling economy and tons of quests to farm PoE currency such as Exalted Orbs, it’s an ever-evolving ARPG that continues to improve.

There’s Always New Content to Look Forward to

Arguably the best thing about Path of Exile is that there’s always something new to look forward to, whether that be a new League or an expansion. The team that runs the engines of Path of Exile, Grinding Gear Games (GGG), is wholly dedicated to just this franchise and game. While they’ve also been working hard on some other tasks, they’re also related to the PoE franchise as a whole such as the Path of Exile mobile port and the awaited sequel to PoE, PoE 2. Grinding Gear Games is notoriously known for continuously updating and improving the game years after Path of Exile’s launch. Thanks to their commitment to putting out frequent but quality updates of Path of Exile, it’s easy to see why millions of players are enamored with the ARPG. Need we remind you that the game is 100% free-to-play for everyone? PoE currency such as Exalted Orbs can only be gotten through playing the game. The only things that GGG offers to other players that they can buy with real money are stash tabs and cosmetic items.

There’s always a new season every 13 weeks. So should a player get tired of the current season that they’re in, they have the opportunity to return to the game and try out the new mechanics, skills, game-play modes, and many more that every season offers. Most ARPGs tend to follow a slower pace, and that much rings true for Path of Exile. Those that prefer a dynamic and fast-paced game certainly would have to adjust to it, but it’s important as it gets players to learn to get a feel for the new things that await them.

Flexible Like Water

Class is a flexible notion in Path of Exile. A first-time player would feel paralyze with freedom due to the game being far more flexible than any of its genre stalemates. For example, Diablo 3 offered structured character classes that players can simply follow along. It’s easy to understand and straightforward, but it often leads to boredom as it doesn’t tap into a player’s creative mind. On the other hand, the classes in Path of Exile are almost irrelevant. It’s very possible to start off being a Witch in the game and then soon invest all of your skill points into your character’s strength, turning the frail but power staff-wielding Witch into a melee maniac that uses a beefy sledgehammer.

The customization runs deep in Path of Exile. Experience allows players to increase the scope of their character rather than focusing on specific abilities. In fact, as a player dives deeper into the game, their skill will mostly be tied to their equipment rather than their specialization. This results in the possibilities of what a player can build for their character endless, as Path of Exile allows all sorts of customization and skillset switching in the ever-expanding web of the passive skill tree.

Final Remarks

It’s easy to assume that every ARPG in existence uses the same formula over and over again without any real innovation behind the games. While they do vary in flavor and setting, their design is very much the same. While that may be true at first, it’s at the later stages where an ARPG reveals itself, and that much is true for Path of Exile. While it can be looked at as a typical ARPG where players would have to grind to get PoE currency such as Exalted Orbs for thousands of hours, it game is so much more than that. New seasons after every three months or so, substantial updates that always add quality-of-life changes, and with content that’s full to the brim, Path of Exile truly takes the cake for being the best ARPG in existence that still strives forward for further improvement.
