I don’t really post about things like this but in light of the crazy events in Orlando, FL, my Facebook has been flooded with images of the victims, the shooter, and people with opinions. Not all opinions are good but there was one video posted by AJ+ yesterday that featured a former CIA agent that really got me thinking.
Amaryllis Fox worked undercover on counterterrorism and intelligence for the CIA for nearly 10 years. In the video she speaks about some of the differences between Muslim countries and America. She mentions that if you were to ask someone in Iraq why America is dropping bombs they would say “because they waged a war on Islam.” While if you ask someone in America why 9/11 happened it is said that “they hate us because we are free.”
I can’t say that I necessarily feel different from that sentiment, or haven’t thought it to be true. However, what I can say is that there has to be more. Fox makes an excellent point when she explains that the narratives we usually hear are “stories manufactured by a really small number of people on both sides who amass a great deal of power and wealth by convincing the rest of us to keep killing each other.” The conclusion of the video is Fox’s explanation that we need to examine our foreign policy in order to defuse the situation rather than “pouring kerosene on a candle.”
I have often wondered why we are in these wars to begin with and I always go back to the same thought, because someone of power decided we should be. It’s not a good answer, but it’s the answer that I can come up. Are we really that different? I understand we have different beliefs, but at the core of who we are as humans are we that different? Don’t we all just want to be happy? Feel loved? Want the best for our loved ones? If at our core we are all the same than can it be said that we need to find a common ground rather than continuing to massacre each other?
If in every war, battle, argument, disagreement, anything, we each believe that we are the good guy then how do we come to an agreement? How do we settle anything in life? We listen, because listening is not only the “real way to disarm your enemy,” as Fox stated, it is also the way to learn, and grow as people. It is only by truly listening and understanding one another that our society can slowly come together, at least in my opinion.
