Interior Design Rules that are Worth Breaking

Do you want to renovate the interior of your home, but you’re so confused with all the rules telling you what is an acceptable choice and what is a big no-no? If you are, we have a solution for you. Just forget the rules. In order to help you achieve this, here is a list of interior design rules that are absolutely worth breaking.

Only small furniture is acceptable in a small room

We bet you have heard this rule many times. However, rest assured that this is not completely true. Of course, you cannot buy only huge pieces if you don’t have enough space, but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy one bigger piece which will go perfectly with the rest of your furniture.

Choose bright colours for small rooms

Designers are often obsessed with making rooms look more spacious, and for this reason they usually recommend white and other bright colours which can make a small room look bigger. Although, this is absolutely true, it shouldn’t limit you in any way. If you feel more comfortable with having your walls painted in darker hues, go for it. After all, you are the one who will be spending a lot of time in this room.

Don’t paint the ceilings

Another often heard advice is that you should never paint the ceilings. However, we are bound to disagree, since there is no better way to add some life and drama to a room than by painting its ceiling. Depending on whether you want your walls to look higher or lower, you should choose a lighter or darker ceiling paint. Remember that you are the one who gets to decide, so, stick to what you like. The only thing you should consider is hiring quality painting services, just to make sure all your ideas are turned into reality exactly how you have pictured them.

Don’t even try to design your house by yourself

How often have you heard somebody saying: “Leave the job to the professionals”? We bet at least a hundred times. However, don’t listen to such advice. You are perfectly capable of making your own decisions, especially today when you can find so much information on the Internet regarding this topic. So, instead of paying a fortune for an interior designer, make your own research, read relevant magazines and follow your wishes.

Tiles are not for a living room

Although, it’s true that we most often encounter tiles in kitchens or bathrooms, this shouldn’t necessarily mean that we cannot incorporate them in our living room design as well. Especially, since it’s very important that you find your innovative and unique style. And not only will the tiles catch everybody’s eye, but they’re usually low maintenance.

You shouldn’t mix styles, everything must match

A key to an interesting and lively look is a mixture of styles. So, saying that everything in the room must match is basically the same as telling somebody that they should be boring, and we all know that boring is far from appealing. Thus, go crazy and spice things up a little bit. For example, you can mix different textures and colours in order to find the perfect balance.

Stick to white kitchen cupboards

It seems that designers nowadays are quite obsessed with white kitchen furniture, especially white cupboards. If you like this style, go for it, but the rest of us shouldn’t feel something like that is a must-have. You have your freedom to choose, so, don’t be afraid to try other nuances as well. For example, you can experiment with various darker shades which will create a perfect contrast with lighter tiles. Thus, your kitchen will get a sophisticated and elegant look which will certainly be noticed.

As you can see, rules are made to be broken. Above all, it’s important that you love how your home looks like. So, don’t ever hesitate to think outside the box, and feel free to capriciously follow your own desires.
