Sometimes, the world can seem a pretty dire place; it’s often easy to forget to appreciate the little, everyday things that make us happy. So I have made a list (in no particular order) of all the tiny things that I find myself taking for granted in the hope of spreading some love.

1. THE SOUND OF BIRDS IN THE MORNING

For me, waking up to the sound of pigeons cooing reminds me of home in the countryside, and always makes me think of summer.

2. A BACON BUTTY

This one is pretty self-explanatory – they just always taste like perfection.

3. GETTING YOUR EYELINER FLICKS RIGHT ON THE FIRST TRY

No matter how good you are at doing your makeup (and I am definitely not speaking for myself here as I have no clue what I’m doing), the flicks are, without fail, the hardest part. I always feel a small victory when they look even without having to redo them 8000 times, like it’s an omen for a good day.

4. WATCHING ‘FRIENDS’

There is absolutely no shame in binge-watching Friends for hours at a time without moving. It’s what Comedy Central is there for. It also cheers you straight up if you’re ever feeling down.

5. THE SMELL OF ‘SOAP AND GLORY’ SHOWER GEL

I don’t know what they put in this stuff, but I do know that I feel like a new human every time I use it. Why does it smell so amazing??

6. BELTING ALONG TO THE RADIO WHILE YOU’RE DRIVING

The louder, the better, I’d say. Little Mix and Justin Bieber are the current top contenders for my one-woman car concerts.

7. LOOKING BACK THROUGH OLD PHOTOGRAPHS

Whether they’re from a week ago, a year ago or a lifetime ago, looking back over photos never fails to make me smile. It’s also a happy reminder of the people you have known and the places you’ve been.

8. PLANNING & BOOKING A HOLIDAY

I would actually say this is just as exciting as the holiday itself. And (obviously) you need an entire new wardrobe for it.

9. RECEIVING A CUTE MESSAGE FROM SOMEONE

It could be a old friend, new friend, boyfriend or family member: a nice message will make someone’s day, and remind them that they are loved. Even more exciting is getting a letter or postcard – people don’t do enough of that anymore.

10. GETTING INTO A BED WITH FRESHLY WASHED SHEETS

There is something so satisfying about climbing into a bed with freshly washed bedding – especially if you have just had a bath and put on clean pyjamas too.

11. BUYING BRAND-NEW BOOKS

Nerdy, I know, but for me nothing can beat the feeling of starting a new, unspoilt book.

12. SUNSETS

Whether you’re at home or on holiday, sunsets are just plain beautiful, and can lift your mood even on the worst of days.

13. THE SMELL OF DINNER COOKING

If you’re like me and can’t even cook a ready meal without setting fire to it/your apartment, then the smell of someone else cooking you dinner as you come home is bliss.

14. DRINKING PRETTY COCKTAILS WITH A VIEW

Rooftop or beach bars are possibly my favourite places in the world, and when the cocktails are as beautiful as the scenery that helps too.

15. GOING FOR A WALK BY THE SEA

If you need to clear your head, get out of the house or just want to enjoy the scenery, sea air cures almost everything.

16. A BIG, COSY JUMPER

Usually an old, slightly worn-out one, and always with a cup of tea in hand.

17.  REDISCOVERING AN OLD FAVOURITE SONG

Or album (i.e. S Club 7’s Greatest Hits).

18. CATCHING UP WITH A FRIEND

What with universities, jobs, years abroad, etc., it’s sometimes easy to forget to make time for the people who are most important to you. You may not see each other often with good friends, but when you do, you have the best time.

19. VISITING SOMEWHERE NEW

Especially if it’s somewhere you have always wanted to go.

20. CUTE COFFEE SHOPS

Just for a break from the whole Starbucks/Costa culture, sitting in a little independently-run coffee shop with some cake and a good book is a pretty good way to spend an afternoon.
