22 Things I've Learned in 22 Years Like 1 Twitter Lauren Mieszkalski Follow Aug. 27, 2016, 1:07 p.m. in Life and Styles Views: 714 Like us on facebook Ah birthdays. Cake, friends, family and the excuse to look fabulous and post a million Instagram selfies. I would be lying if I didn't say birthdays are one of my favourite celebrations in the year. When it's your birthday, you are celebrating with the people that love you and have most likely been with you through various parts of your life. When you're a guest for someone's birthday, you are spending a day showing how special the birthday boy or girl is to you . At both you have an excuse to dive into delicious cake, food and maybe a couple cocktails (if you are legal age). As today happens to be my 22nd birthday, today is my day for cake and selfies. But, I am also very sentimental which means I have used some time to reflect on 22 things I have learned in 22 years. #1: Don't Waste Your Time on People That Don't Care About You We have all had that frenemy or asshole boyfriend that we have kept around way too long. They aren't worth your time as those people won't change. Cut them out quickly to make space for those that are truly special to your life. #2: Treasure The People Around You May sound conflicting with my last point, but the people you treasure are not the bad boyfriends or that friend that only decides to be your friend three days out of the week. A hard part of becoming older is that the people around you are too. No one we love is around forever. Hold onto them when you can and love them. #3: Say I Love You to Those Who Deserve it Saying I love you to those in your life that deserve it can be so special. If you love someone, tell them. People should know how much they mean to you. #4: Save Money for Experiences, Not Things This is coming from a fashion girl that loves a killer outfit. Memories are a way to celebrate times in your life with other people. So, go ahead book that trip to New York with your BFF... you won't regret it and that Chloe Drew bag can wait. #5: Try Any Food Once Life is too short to be picky... Try any food you can as food is one of the best parts of life. #6: Value Your Education You are so extremely fortunate if you live in a place where education is so readily available. There are people in this world that dream of being able to go to school, but never will. Your education is your key to understanding our world and your ability to make a significant impact. #7: Create Your Own Opportunities Don't make excuses that there are no opportunities for you. You want a job at that company? Contact them. Make yourself look so good they can't say no. #8: Give your Mom a Hug We spend so much time in our tween and teen years rebelling and feeling that our mom doesn't understand us and wants us to be five forever. Remember that she is getting older too, and is learning how to support you as you get older. At the end of the day, she loves you even if she says you're too young to date. Give her a hug and say thank you, she does a lot for you. #9: Less is More If I could go back and tell my 15 year old self that too much black eyeliner is not a good look, I would. #10: Put the Self-Tanner Down I honestly don't get self-tanner, orange and streaky all over is not a good look. I'm fair skinned and I will wear shorts no matter how white my legs are. #11: Embrace Your Body Your weight will fluctuate, you may be 5'0 rather than having legs for days and you might not like your nose. Let it go. You are who you are and the faster you can come to accept yourself and how attractive you are, the better you will feel. #12: Celebrate Other's Success Successful people can also celebrate others. Whether that be your boyfriend or your best friend that landed that job. Take them out for dinner or buy them a drink! #13: You're Allowed to be Selfish You could have a million friends, but at the end of the day the only person you have to live with forever is yourself. That means that you need to take time for yourself. The world doesn't revolve around you, but that doesn't mean you can't do things that make you happy. #14: Love Your Job It makes me sad when people are working a job they absolutely hate. Yes, money is important for a million reasons. But if you have the ability, find a job you love. Your career should be something you are proud of and want to share with others. If you hate your job, find one you can love. #15: Social Media is Meant to be Powerful, not Cruel As I have grown up in the social media age, I definitely have a few Facebook statuses and airing of dirty laundry that I regret. Social media is a powerful tool, so use it to share, keep in touch with others and maybe for business. Cyber bullying, inappropriate photos and creating questionable Facebook statuses shouldn't be part of it. #16: Put Your Phone Down With social media and the amount of apps we can download these days, we are always connected with our eyes glued to our phone screens. Put them down and enjoy the real people around you. Those are moments that you can never get back. #17: Say Thank You It's simple, easy and appreciated by all. #18: If You Did Something Wrong, Apologize It can save a relationship, resolve a problem and prove that you can take responsibility. #19: Give Back Whether you volunteer, donate money or help the old lady down the street we need to give back to our community where we can. #20: Dare to Begin Want to make a Youtube channel, start your own business or move to another city? Dare to begin. Everyone that is at the top of the world had to make the same step into the unknown. #21: Sometimes the Best Thing to Say is Nothing Yes, a wise man once said this or that. But once a wise man also said nothing. Sometimes no words solve more than they can. #22: Good Things Don't Come to Those That Just Sit on Their Ass Relationships, work, hobbies. Anything. You have to work at them all, but that's one of the reasons you should love them. If we didn't have to work to accomplish positive things, we would be bored and unmotivated to do it. Good things come to those who work hard for them.
