You want to get into reading but which books are good to start with? What fits your taste? Well, this is your lucky day! This is my first post in a series of posts where I introduce you guys to all the things that are good to know if you want to get into reading. I will start the series out by introducing you to different genres and which books I think are good to start with in each. These will all be books that I personally really love but I will show you very different books, so there’ll be something for everyone! The genre that will start this series off is fantasy.

Fantasy is probably my favorite genre, my all time favorite books are fantasy books and it therefore only felt right to start with it. Fantasy can be a lot of different things and I will today try to introduce you to two different types. Number one thing I would like to say before you start a fantasy book: You can’t expect to be hooked on the story from page 1, you are being introduced to a whole new world so you need to give it a little time!

There are a lot of famous books, movies and TV shows that are set in the fantasy world and I will compare my recommendations with them so you have an idea of what I am talking about.

The first type of fantasy books I would like to talk about is the action-packed fantasy book that contains some great friendships and doesn’t evolve too much around romance.

The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and Harry Potter are all some famous books that has been adapted into a movie/TV show and it is this type of fantasy story. I haven’t read Game of Thrones yet, but I do love of both the other two series and I would highly recommend you reading them both (even though Lord of the Rings is a very heavy series, don’t start with that one). Below I will recommend you some books that are similar to those 3 movies/TV shows above:

Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan

My rating: 5/5 stars

My number one recommendation to you if you are looking for an action-packed adventurous and awesome fantasy read is the Percy Jackson series! This series follows our protagonist Percy. Percy has been kicked out of several schools due to his ADHD and dyslexia. One day he founds out that the myths about the greek gods are true and that his dad in reality is one of the greek gods which makes Percy a demigod. A demigod is always being chased by monsters and Percy is therefore send to a summer camp where he gets to live with other demigods and where he is protected. At the camp Percy discovers that Zeus’ lightning bolt is stolen and he has to help him get it back!

This book is super funny and makes you chuckle a lot. It also educates you a lot about greek mythology in such a fun way that you don't realize. It is also a very easy read, it doesn’t take many pages before you are hooked on the story and it is therefore a good place to start when you want to get into the fantasy genre. This series is a middle-grade series, but I have seen many adults love it as well so you can enjoy it no matter age!

An Ember in The Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

My rating: 4.5/5 stars

This book switches perspective each chapter between Laia and Elias. Laia is a slave and Elias is a soldier. They both live under the Martial Empire, where every wrong step is punished with death.

Laia’s brother one day gets arrested and Laia seeks out to the rebels to help her get him back. She is here forced to spy  for the rebels as a slave in exchange for their help to free her brother. As a slave Laia meets Elias and they start helping each other.

This is an awesome and action-packed story, it does contain some romance, but there are also some great friendships. There are currently only one book out, but the second comes by the end of August.

Then we have the more emotional and romance focused fantasy books. These does also has a lot of action but romance does play a great deal in these books. You can compare the type of story with The Hunger Games and Divergent, the protagonists struggle to save the world but their romantic life is an important part of the story. I know these two movies aren't fantasy, but they do contain that type of story.

The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare

My rating: 5/5 stars

The Infernal Devices is set in 1875 in London. It follows Tessa Gray who in the search for her missing brother meets the shadowhunters Will and Jem. They are both willing to help her and she soon feels very attracted to them both. Her bother missing is, however, a lot more complicated than they thought and they found themselves up against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organization of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans.

This book is one of my all time favorite series, it is so beautiful written and you will get very emotional while reading it. All books by Cassandra Clare are great but I definitely think this is the perfect place to start, if you are a new reader. It is my favorite of her books and also the easiest to get into.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

My rating: 4.5/5 stars

A Court of Thorns and Roses is a retelling of beauty and the beast. It follows Feyre a young huntress who lives a poor life with her family. When she one day kills a wolf she gets dragged into a magical world by a beast-like creature. She soon discovers that her captor isn't in reality a beast and she starts developing feelings toward him.

This series evolves a lot around romance, but it does also have some fighting scenes. The first half of this book is very character focused, while the other half is a lot more action-packed. Sarah J. Maas is most famous for her Throne of Glass series, but I would recommend you to start out with this one!
