A Quick and General Guide to Traveling in Italy Like 0 Twitter Irina Yakubin Follow June 20, 2016, 3:50 p.m. in Life and Styles Views: 559 Like us on facebook Italy is a beautiful country with a rich history and culture. I was lucky to have recently visited several cities in Italy including Rome, Milan, and Florence Here are a few things that I want to share with others who want to visit this beautiful country. Weather: It’s unpredictable so invest in an umbrella and bring it along, even on a hot day. That being said, checking the forecast in the region that you are visiting can give you a rough idea of what to expect. Street Traffic: Most of the cities in Italy were built for horses and pedestrians, not cars. This, however, doesn’t stop modern transportation from utilizing said roads. It is not uncommon to see cars, motorcycles and even busses share the narrow streets with pedestrians. Traffic lights are less important than being aware of cars and bicycles so many people will start crossing before the light has turned if no cars are in sight. Peddlers: They target tourists and will attempt to sell you something. One common gimmick I’ve noticed is that the peddler will claim that something is free, and then ask for a “donation” sometimes for a cause like a children’s hospital or orphanage. Subway system: Has been pretty great in Milan and Rome. Though the subways in Milan have been notably cleaner. Food: Breakfast in Italy runs from around seven until 10 am and lunch ends at 2 pm. After that, most restaurants will be closed until dinner time, which is from 7 until 10 pm for Italians with the exception of happy hour buffets, which will open between four and six. This is something to be aware of as you may not be able to find food between two and seven unless you are in a “tourist” area. I hope that these have been helpful. Please note that I did have a chance to visit Venice, and that this will be covered in a separate article.
