“Maybe you’re a woman in search of her word,” said Sophie to her friend Liz in Eat Pray Love.

I was a woman in search of my word last fall. And the one before that. And the one before that. I am a woman in search of my one word every fall.

(No, I am not demented.)

I learned of this spiritual practice five or six years ago and have followed it ever since. The idea is that you decide on one word and focus on it for an entire year. Choose the right word and you can accomplish amazing things. It can change your life. It can even become incorporated into the title of your first published novel.

My word for 2015 was BRAVE. It wasn’t the word I chose initially; that was FOCUS. I thought I was all set. I knew what my word was going to be early, like, in October. It was all settled. And then one day I just decided to check out the My One Word website, and scrolled through the “Pick your word” section. And then it happened. BRAVE happened. It just leaped out at me. Brave! Of course! It’s a noun! And a verb! And an adjective! What versatility! So I allowed BRAVE to choose me.

I never looked back.

Back to Liz. She chose PIZZA for her word.

Now, why didn’t I think of that?
