I never paid attention to my thoughts growing up. Why would I? They were something that were just there, that just happened. In college, I thought about boys, exams, and friends. I stressed about finances and where I wanted to go for grad school. But I didn’t think about my thoughts having an actual impact on my life.

Not until a year ago.

The Story:

My husband is a student and has been since shortly after we married 6 1/2 years ago. Just over a year ago things were tighter than they’d ever been. He’d taken courses over the summer that we’d had to put on our credit card, we were moving to another city for a graduate program, and we wouldn’t receive our student loan until after rent was due. We received a couple generous donations from family members that would help us until our loan came through, but we still weren’t receiving enough from the loan to get us through the semester. Yikes, right?

My mom knew of our situation and recommended I read a book by Leslie Householder entitled, Hidden Treasures: Heaven’s Astonishing Help With Your Money Matters. Now, if you aren’t spiritual, these are essentially the same principles that are presented in her bestselling book, The Jack Rabbit Factor: Why You Can. The difference is that Hidden Treasures bypasses the analogy/story and gives you the principles straight up, as well as more of an explanation of how it works. Note: Leslie Householder has not asked me to promote her books and I am in no way connected with her. I am sharing this information because it has changed my life.

I immediately started reading it because, well, we needed help! In the book Leslie talked about the law of attraction and how we attract the things we want in our lives by visualizing them, imagining how it feels to have it, and not doubting that we can have this in our lives. (Similar to the book, The Secret) When we put things out to the universe, it works together for our good. She also suggests writing what we want down as an important step to obtaining it. Similarly, we can repel the things we want by allowing fear and doubt to prevail.

I didn’t know how writing about something I needed was going to bring it into my life. But I was willing to try ANYTHING (Well, within reason.)

I got about half-way through the book when I thought, I need to start this NOW. So, I did. I grabbed my journal and wrote that we needed $3,000 within three months. That was when the money would run out. Right before Christmas. I imagined what it would be like to have that money and how peaceful that would feel.

The next day I got a call from my husband. A professor he didn’t know and had never heard of had contacted him. He was a new professor to the university and had been going through the graduate applications. He wanted my husband to work for him as a research assistant. It provided the money we needed, plus invaluable experience in my husband’s chosen field of study. We couldn’t have predicted a more wonderful blessing in our lives.


Coincidence? Maybe. But it didn’t feel like one. And I was only half-way through the book! Since completing Leslie’s book on Money Matters I’ve also read The Jackrabbit Factor and the sequel, Portal to Genius. While I didn’t feel they were the most well-written books, the principles were what I was after.

Since that incident a year ago I have also added another component that has significantly helped my ability to visualize what I need/want. A vision board. I know there are many different ways to do a vision board. My version comes from listening to a CD by Kirk Duncan, founder of 3 Key Elements W By utilizing both, my life has changed. I have used my vision board for everything from a washing machine (I only cared that it worked and was under $50. I went to pick up one that was listed for $50 and ended up getting it for free) to my novel being accepted for publication by a publishing company that was looking out for my best interest (Devil’s Playground was accepted for publication by Clean Reads Publishing about a month ago.)

Bottom line: Our thoughts are so so important. Have you known people where everything just seems to go their way? They are probably applying these principles, even if subconsciously. Some people are just a natural at attracting the things they want. For the rest of us, it takes some work to retrain our minds. But it is certainly possible, and it is absolutely worth the effort.

So–how can this work for YOU? I’d like to suggest some simple steps to start.

1: Write it down

What do you want/need? Think of about 9 things you’d like to obtain or accomplish. Writing it down helps me to sort through what I really want, and what is right for me at the time.

2. Make a vision board

DON’T MAKE IT ANYTHING FANCY. You can, but it isn’t necessary. I used duck tape on my wall to make a large square. Its in a location that I can see easily, at eye level. I then either typed up or printed a picture of the desired goal. A combo of items that use words and pictures has worked well for me. I placed those items in three columns of three, which gives a nice even display.

3. Use It

This is where the visualization comes into play. Every morning and every evening just take a couple minutes to look over your board. Many times I will focus on one thing in particular, but you don’t have to.

Take the time to look at the item. Imagine how excited you will be when it happens, as if it already has. If it’s an object, imagine how it feels to touch it, use it, etc. Don’t ask me how it works. It just does. You can read Leslie’s book if you want to get more detailed info.

4. Make a Vision Board Success Book

I love this part of it. When I put up a new item on my board I write the date on it. When I have received it/accomplished it I pull it off and put it in a 3-ring binder. This is my vision board success book. I write the date I pulled the item off my board and a short story of how it came to be. Sometimes its miraculous, sometimes it isn’t as much. But either way, its exciting to go back and be reminded of how powerful our thoughts are.
