Life is going great, everything is normal and then suddenly a tsunami hits us without warning and our world is turned upside down. If you are a non – believer, you will soon get the impression that becoming a Christian guarantees a problem free life. Its easy to believe a Christian life guarantees freedom from sickness, poverty and situations that gives you a good reason to worry. After all, this is what we are told when we switch on Christian television, or we visit one of the many internet ministries. We are given their idea on how to solve our problem, we are given their guarantee it will work, but when we use their idea and method it never works. It does not help or change the situation to give your way out of debt. And you can never sow enough money into a ministry for your loved ones salvation. You can not give money to be healed or give money to have your life changed for the better. But even so, this is what we are normally told to do. “Do this, and this will happen” But its not just about money, we are presented with all kinds of different solutions. Such as one ministry said you should not eat or drink for 3 days, remain awake between the hours of midnight and 3 am to pray for three hours for 3 days and if you did – God would answer your prayers. You cant starve yourself to death to get God to move on your behalf. But even so, this is what we are normally told to do, “Do this, and this will happen”. This is a passport from Norway, the land of the midnight sun in Scandinavia. Because I am a Norwegian citizen this passport gives me access to my country when I have been abroad. My name is on the inside and the government of Norway has confirmed that I have a legal right to own a Norwegian passport. When I arrive in Norway I have a legal right to gain access to the Kingdom of Norway because my name is printed on the inside of that passport. I have a legal right to access all the benefits of being a citizen of the Kingdom of Norway. When I arrive in Norway I have a legal right to be let into the Kingdom of Norway because I have a Norwegian passport. But what would happen if I showed up at the airport with a piece of paper which I had colored red, and written Norge, Noreg, Pass, Passport on the outside? It would not be a genuine passport, it would be something I had made myself and they would not let me into the Kingdom of Norway. What happened if I showed up at the airport and tried to gain access to the Kingdom on account of all the good things I have done in my life? I would be denied access to the Kingdom of Norway. What if I tried to gain access by telling customs I am a true citizen of Norway because of who my parents are. Or what if I tried to gain access by telling customs I am a true citizen of Norway because I have not eaten anything for the last 3 days? They would of course deny me access to the Kingdom. The only thing that grants me access to Norway when I have been abroad traveling is a proof of my citizenship. And the only proof is a genuine red passport issued by the government of Norway. There are many people who would want access to Norway without such a passport to gain advantage of the benefits of being a citizen of Norway. And there are many people who would like access to the Kingdom of God and the benefits of being a child of God who does not own a passport that gives them access. The Bible is filled with promises. Being a citizen of the Kingdom of God comes with a ton of benefits. First of all, we are children of God and our Dad wants the best for us. He wants to bless us, heal us, fight for us, provide for us, guide us, and deliver us (Deut 28:1-13) But you need a passport to gain access to the Kingdom of God, and all its benefits. Only a true genuine passport, issued by God will grant you such access. This is the passport, the death of Jesus for your sins on a cross. As a Norwegian citizen I hold a Norwegian passport. So I have legal access to the Kingdom of Norway with my Norwegian passport. But I have to choose to use it when I enter Norway after traveling abroad. I have the opportunity to choose to try to enter with everything else but my passport. I can have the passport in my pocket, but still choose to gain entrance by impressing the customs by telling them who my parents are, how little I have eaten for 3 days, or by making my own passport using a pen and some crayons. They will of course deny me access, and even though I have the passport in my pocket, they will still deny me access until I decide to act on my faith and take it up from my pocket and present it to them. The moment I act on my faith they will grant me entrance to the Kingdom of Norway. There is only 1 passport that gives you legal access to the Kingdom of God. There is only 1 passport that gives you legal access to Gods promises. There is only 1 passport that shows the rest of the world who your Father is. The cross of Christ is that 1 passport. Perhaps you received that passport the day you got saved. But since then it has been sitting there in your pocket and you have tried to gain access to the Kingdom using other means. And now you are wondering why do you not see more of Gods promises fulfilled in your life? Why are you not healed yet? Provided for? Why is God not fighting for you the way He promised? Could it be because your passport is sitting there in your pocket, and you are trying to gain access to the Kingdom using other means? You are trying to do something to gain access when all you have to do is to act on your faith and take it out of your pocket and trust again? This is the one way we gain access to the Kingdom of God when we die, and this is the one way we gain access to the promises of God as long we live. We have to choose to take the death of Jesus out of our pocket where it has been sitting to long, and choose to act on our faith by choosing to say “I trust the death of Jesus for my sins is enough to meet all my needs”. The moment you do this you are acting on your faith, you are using your passport and you will be given entrance to the Kingdom of God and all its promises. So make the decision to throw away all those attempts to impress God. Dont listen to your popular TV preacher telling you what you should do to make God act on your behalf. All of those suggestions are attempts to gain access to the Kingdom of God without using your passport. And when you use your passport, your trust in Jesus death for your sins, you will soon understand that the Christian life is not easy. You will still get sick, and sometimes your life will be like that little sailboat. A tsunami will show up out of nowhere and threaten to sink your little boat. But when that happens, the Lord promises to deliver you out of it. Why? Because your trust in the death of Jesus makes you a citizen of His Kingdom. Your trust makes you a child of God, and the Lord promises to help all of His citizens and children no matter what happens to them. He only asks for one thing, to see your passport – your trust in His death for your sins. How will he help us? We dont know. In our minds we have this understanding how it will happen. So often we want to tell Him how to do it. And if He does not do it the way we want Him to, we sometimes dont accept His help. As a citizen of Norway, I know my government will help me if I am in trouble abroad. I only have to show them my passport and they will act on my behalf. But it would be rather stupid of me if I where to dictate to them how they are going to help me. And if I refused their help because they I did not like their way of doing things it would be very stupid of me. Why then do we refuse the Lords help? The Lord promises us that will see the destruction of the wicked, those who do not hold a passport of the Kingdom of God. Those who choose not to use their passport, their trust in the death of Jesus for their sins. And when we do see their destruction we will be struck with fear. Because we will see another side of our God, we will see the Holy and righteous side that reacts in anger when confronted with sin. We will be tempted to fear that His wrath will strike us as well. But when we are tempted to fear, we have to remember the one thing that protects us from His wrath. What is that one thing? Our heavenly passport, our trust in the death of Jesus for our sins. That trust is the only thing that protects us from the wrath of God. That trust is the only thing that gives us legal access to His Kingdom and His promises. That trust ensures us His deliverance from our trials and tests. That trust ensures us that when He sees the Blood He will pass over and not harm us in any way. The Blood of Jesus and our trust in the Blood of Jesus given for our sins is the only way we are protected from His wrath. It is our only guarantee for His help and access to HIs promises. We have to remember this, the God who wiped out Egypt and killed all the firstborns in Egypt is our God. He did not go into the Israelites and killed their firstborn because He saw the Blood applied to the doorposts. When the Israelites applied the Blood to their doorposts they where using their passport, their trust in Jesus dying for their sins. That protected them from Gods wrath. They still saw the destruction of the wicked and unrighteous but they where not harmed. Why? Because they used their passport, their trust in Jesus dying for their sins. (Yes I know Jesus had not died on a cross when this happened. But they acted in faith on what was about to happen many years later. We act in faith on what has happened many years ago). And when they had seen the destruction of the wicked, the Lord Himself brought them out of Egypt. The Lord fought for them, provided for them, healed them all, prospered them and they did not do much them self. In fact the only thing they did was to use their passport, their trust in Jesus dying for them for their sins. So make sure today you are using your passport, your trust in the death of Jesus. Because when you do, you will see that the Christian life is not a bed of roses. But it is actually easy because our Lord fights for us.
