Many people who know me, especially my clients, also knows about my love for Aromatherapy. I have always been a great believer in it’s benefits and what essential oils can deliver for well-being. 

Essential oils have long been used (for centuries as a matter of fact) in therapeutic, spiritual, hygienic and ritualistic purposes by ancient civilizations including the Egyptians, Chinese, Romans, Indians and Greeks. General uses for these oils were for perfumes, medicines and cosmetics.

in 1907, a small number of European scientists and doctors first suggested the concept of Aromatherapy for general health&well being and in 1937, René-Maurice Gattefossé published his discoveries of Aromatherapy in “Aromathérapie: Les Huiles Essentielles, Hormones Végétales” In 1910, Gattefossé burned one of his hands during a lab experiment and later claimed he treated the skin effectively after sticking his hand in a container of Lavender oil as a reflex to calm the burn. He noticed the soothing effect that it had on the skin after doing so and continued treating the skin with Lavender until it had fully recovered.

There is no medical evidence that Aromatherapy Oils can cure or prevent disease, but for generations it has been used to promote general well being and also treat conditions such as eczema, stress, anxiety, insomnia, poor digestion and problematic skin. There are a number of uses, especially being applied topically to enable absorption through skin with treatments such as massage, facial and scalp treatments as well as through the olfactory system by inhaling aromas through vaporizers, burners and incense.

For the consumer, Aromatherapy oils are commonly used in perfumes, skin care products and bath products. In a growing market for organic preferences in products, these ingredients have grown in popularity over the past few decades as a natural alternative to pharmaceutical produced products. There are over 40 known essential oils, each with their individual benefits such a Camomile for calming the senses and sensitive skin and Lavender to promote relaxation, stress reduction and balancing the skin. Some oils have similar properties and can work more effectively when combined. This is where the term “aromatherapy blending” comes from and this adds more depth to it’s benefits and effects.

Essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be blended with a base oil such as grape seed, coconut or almond oil. Over exposure to undiluted oils can cause skin irritation and over absorption of these oils into the system which may have side effects. Extra care should also be taken with essential oils when taking certain medicines such as anti coagulants (warfarin). Aromatherapy oils are generally contraindicated during pregnancy and in the first trimester especially, however certain oils are safe during later stages of pregnancy. It is also contraindicated for lactating women. Aromatherapy is highly contraindicated for sufferers of Epilepsy as most oils may trigger an attack. Generally consumer products on the market have safe volumes of essential oils, but always do read the label for any warnings if not sure.

So the next question would be, how can Aromatherapy benefit me? Aromatherapy oils have a number of benefits and being qualified in Aromatherapy, I can vouch that they do in fact work. I am a great believer that the oils your olfactory senses respond fondly to will work most effectively on your skin and for your body. In Aromatherapy treatments, oils are blended to your personal needs. This has to be done by a qualified person who is educated on which oils are most beneficial to you. Unfortunately essential oils are widely available in health stores which isn’t always a good thing as a lot of people using it for personal reasons end up using too much or too little of the required product as this often contradicts the wonderful effects Aromatherapy has!
