Earlier this year Ubisoft released Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia and I just now got a chance to play it. I have to say it's a great game but I'm not sure it's a great Assassin's Creed game.

You may have heard my spiel about Uplay and those problems didn't disappear for this one but my issue with the game actually has nothing to do with that frustration, though it did play a role in my playing the game so late. My issue is that this feels like a very cool game but it doesn't really have the Assassin's Creed (AC) feel. That may be where the "Chronicles" comes in to distinguish it from other AC games. This is a beautiful 2D platformer with a black, white, and red color scheme. The setting is the USSR and the name of the game is stealth. Unlike in other AC installments, combat is not easy and it's a really good way to get yourself killed. The only way to kill an enemy so far for me is to shoot them from afar or use a blade that cannot be chosen from the weapon list at the lower left but just comes out during risky take downs. The only call backs to AC are the leap of faith, the beef with the Templars, and the ever familiar Assassin garb. Other than this, I'm not seeing what makes this game Assassin's Creed .

The approach I usually take with the game is balls to the wall parkour and the occasional fight that I usually win or successfully run away from. AC Chronicles: Russia tends to punish players for this approach because combat is unwinnable (so far) and I find it really difficult to run away when spotted. For this reason, your only choice is to distract and sneak by or kill from a distance which isn't as safe as it sounds.

That being said, this is a great game. I love this art style and stealth games are one of my favorites because they make you think about how to approach the situation. I'm also a sucker for cold war conspiracy. Were this a standalone game without a franchise to set it up, I would recommend it 100%. Coming into it expecting the normal AC gameplay, I think I was a little perplexed. I will adjust my playing style to this new game, but I want AC fans to know that this is a different type of game than they're used to so know this before buying it and feeling misled. It's definitely worth a try if you're into any of the elements of 2d platforming, stealth, cool comic book/soviet propaganda art style. If so, I will wholly recommend this game.

Verdict: Great game. Not a great Assassin's Creed game.
