A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen tells a hilarious tale of camping misfortunes that occur when Mr. Magee decides to take his little dog Dee camping. The rhyming text tells how a bear lumbers into the campsite looking for some sweet smelling marshmallows and accidently dislodges the camper from the car. Mr. Magee and his dog, Dee, keep on sleeping as they roll into the river and on a wild adventure. The pictures are bright and colorful with lots of quirky details. I love Mr. Magee’s thick glasses and the picturesque setting of the great outdoors. It has some good vocabulary embedded in the rhymes, like describing the mountains as knolls (because it rhymes with coals) or describing the car’s hitch as tasting rank (it does rhyme with bank). The humorous story is fun to read and talk about before or after a camping trip or just while snuggling up as a bedtime story.
