Who are the Rat Queens?

A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, and they're in the business of killing all god's creatures for profit.

It's also a darkly comedic sass-and-sorcery series starring Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric and Betty the Hippy Smidgen Thief. This modern spin on an old-school genre is a violent monster-killing epic that is like Buffy meets Tank Girl in a Lord of the Rings world on crack!

I don't really have much to say about this apart from I'm in love! I bought it months ago but as I've been overseas, I wasn't able to read it. I picked it up my first day back and fell in love. Not only is the art incredibly beautiful, the Queens themselves are unique and so badass!

The girls are perfectly imperfect. There aren't enough words to accurately describe how amazing they are, you just have to read it and experience them yourself. As Kurtis J. Wiebe said:

“ I want to write stories about women that I see in my everyday life, about friendship and to make comics that include and embrace diversity.”

He truly did that, the range of characters in this is amazing! And this is what we need, we need not only more females in media but more diverse females.

On to the art: it's stunning. I absolutely adore it. Pictured below are two of my favourite works from Volume One.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to pick up a comic book/graphic novel. It is by far my favourite.

Hi guys, I wrote this review before being told by my friend over at catsshelf about Roc Upchurch and his arrest due to domestic abuse. Had I known this before I bought it, I wouldn't have purchased it. As you can clearly see above I did love it, however, I feel very uncomfortable about supporting him and therefore will not be continuing this series. I am leaving my review as is, and if you want to pick up this series I ask that you try to find a second-hand copy so you are not supporting him directly.
