The primary purpose of weighing products before storage or shipping is to maintain consistent quality. Regardless of how simple or complicated the intended application, weighing scales are valuable fixtures which come in a variety of sizes and capacities. How do you choose the right type of industrial weighing scale for your application? Although you begin by knowing the capacity of the scale you are looking for, there are other considerations you need to look into such as:

 

  • The loading process

  • Availability of forklifts to load the scale

  • Is it permanent or mobile?

  • Available space

  • Weighing scale accuracy

With these considerations in mind, here are the most common types of industrial weighing scales used in various capacities.

 

Basic floor scale

When you imagine what an industrial weight scale looks like, a basic floor scale usually comes to mind. It is often square in shape, with a simple mechanism, and has a weighing capacity of 1,000 lbs. to 20,000 lbs. Basic floor scales are also quite versatile. These work well if you have a forklift which transports pallets onto the scale. You can also choose a basic floor scale made from stainless steel, treaded plate, or smooth plate.


 

Lift scale

A lift scale features a top deck which you can lift up if you want to clean underneath. This option is best if the scale is for weighing chemicals or biological compounds. Some models feature pneumatic remote control to open and lift the top of the scale. Other models can be lifted manually for easy clean-up.

 

Portable floor scale

This type of industrial scale come handy when there is limited space. After using the scale, you can store it elsewhere until the next time it is needed. Portable floor scales may come with built-in ramps either on both sides or on one side only.

 

High precision industrial floor scale

If the application requires high accuracy, a high precision floor scale provides the necessary resolution. The precision is defined by the readability rating of a floor scale. Similar to a basic floor scale, high-precision scales are also made from stainless steel and come with additional features such as ramps and frames.

 

U-shaped industrial scale

Floor scales with regular ramps can pose some issues with space, but this is not the case with u-scales where you can easily move, steer, and lift a pallet onto the scale. Like most floor scales, you can add features to a u-scale such as load plates, or a wider leg to accommodate bigger loads.

 

Low-profile floor scale

This is essentially a basic floor scale which you can place lower on the ground for easy pallet jack access. Typically, a low-profile floor scale comes with two side rails. Unfortunately, the side rails pose a challenge when weighing odd-shaped pallets.
