Consider the Cost

A few days ago, I pulled this old shirt out of my closet. I got the shirt at a Steve Camp concert in the early 90s.

The words on the shirt remind me that many today are hearing a wrong message.

I am talking about people who attempt to share Jesus as if they are selling a product.

The approach is like a commercial for a new product. Pressuring the people to act quickly results in moresales converts.

You must call now to get the best deal. If you call within the hour, we'll throw in some special goodies at no additional charge...hurry supplies are limited!

I never see this approach in the Bible.

Jesus said, "Consider the cost."

If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.  And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.  For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it—  lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’?    Luke 14:26-30

If you have been told that becoming a Christian is the way to achieve your dreams and goals, you've been the victim of a dangerous lie. Jesus is not making you an offer of health, wealth and unlimited worldly success.

Becoming a follower of Jesus is by far the most important thing you will ever do in your life. It is not something trivial to be entered into lightly without understanding. I find it strange that people are cautioned when entering marriage but rushed into becoming a disciple.

Consider the cost of following Jesus.
