According to a study by the University of Florida, in 2007 there were 71 shark attacks and only one fatality.  Since 1990, the average is about 5 deaths per year by shark attack.

According to that same study, in 2007 there were 11 deaths attributed to fireworks, 620 due to excessive cold and 762 in bicycle accidents, yet more people fear sharks than fear riding a bike.  It seems that instead of fearing that which can be dangerous, we fear that which appears dangerous.

We do the same thing in our spiritual lives.  We fear or avoid those things that appear dangerous.  We need to find out what things are dangerous to our eternal existence and then fear and avoid them.  How do find out what they are?  We need to read the Bible and keep His Word close to us.  God commands us to keep His Word in our hearts.  In Deuteronomy 11:27-28 He promises, “A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day: And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God” (KJV)  We cannot obey His commands unless we first know what they are.  Keeping His commands frees us from fear.
