We should be accustomed to this by now. Donald Trump tells the media that he’s going to make an important announcement; in this case, he would address his ‘birther’ position, telling the world whether or not he thinks President Obama was really born in the United States. After such a long time of questioning the president’s citizenship, this seems, on the surface, to be important news. NOT!

What Dishonest Donald in fact did was stand silently mugging for the camera while a procession of questionable ‘military’ figures extolled his virtues. Then, after an interminable period of time—well, actually, 20 minutes, but in TV time, that’s interminable—during which many networks cut the sound and went to their on-air personalities, he stepped forward and made a brief statement: “Hillary Clinton in her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy. I finished it,” Trump said. “President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period. Now we all want to get back to making America strong and great again.” Then, the master con man stepped away from the mike, avoiding questions.

The media was understandably furious—except for Fox News, which complimented him on pulling off a master con. I can sympathize—almost—with the anger of the ‘real’ media, but only a little. Hell, they’ve been letting this shyster get away with hijinks like this since he began his campaign. That they let him, once again, pull off this shell game is almost as much of a condemnation of them as it is of him. He got loads of free publicity, said nothing that most sensible people don’t already know, and tried to shift the blame to someone else. That’s what bs artists do, folks. Only the truly naïve fall for it, and the media, when it comes to Dishonest Donald, they’ve demonstrated an amazing degree of that trait from the start.

I’d like to think this will be the straw that broke the camel’s back, but I’m not holding my breath. After all, Trump’s been pulling cons for most of his adult life, and this is one polecat who hasn’t changed his stripe or removed his odor, and isn’t likely to do so in the foreseeable future.
