"Ms. Martin, I am sorry to inform you that we are no longer in need of your services, therefore on Monday you will no longer be coming to work" she informed me, her voice emotionless. I looked into her icy blue eyes, they had no empathy for them.

"W-what?! Did I do something wrong?" I exclaimed.
"No actually, you were a very good employee. It's just that business is slow and we need to cut costs. You were the newest addition to our team so by default you are the first to go." She replied calmly.
"Can't I have a second chance?!" I asked I felt anger bubble within me, I had worked so hard for them!
"The board has made their decision" she stated, her voice unwavering.
How did it come to this? A million thoughts ran through my mind, what was I going to do?
"Is there anything else, ma'am?" I asked, my voice quivering.
"No you can sort out everything else with human resources" she replied.
I stood up and left the room. My heart beat rapidly in my chest, like a loud drum. I could feel a lump rising in my throat. It took every ounce of energy from within my body to force myself not to cry. A deep uncertainty had filled itself within my heart. What now? I thought. What was I going to tell mum and dad? I could almost feel the burn of humiliation.
I walked through the streets of New York, rain drops fell from the sky, splashing onto my face. Around me, people were rushing around, each person trying to get to their own place. I stood in the middle of the pavement, shivering. My clothes were wet and sticky, my hair was a mess. I looked up at the sky and let out a sigh. Maybe this was what was supposed to happen. Maybe something better will come in the future. I tried to have positive thoughts but I couldn't stop the feeling of worthlessness and loneliness that settled deep within my soul.
