Identity theft is a major problem in our society today.

Identity theft occurs when someone uses another person's personally identifying information, such as a person's name, Social Security number, credit card number or other financial information, without permission, to commit fraud or other crimes.

In other words, it’s when someone gets access to our personal information, such as our name, social security number, credit card account numbers, and passwords with the intent of stealing our identity for their own personal use.identity

Although it has never happened to me, I imagine it would be a nightmare.  Sadly, we now live in an age when we have to protect our identity. Identity theft is a serious crime that affects millions of victims each year. In many cases, individuals don’t realize they are a victim of identity theft until a credit report or loan application reveals a problem.

In the New TestamentJesus warns us of spiritual identity theft. The warning He gave His followers is the one I reverberate today. Be careful! There are people, things and temptations that will lure you away from who you truly are in Christ.

The Bible says in John 10:10 New Living Translation (NLT), “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”

The devil himself is trying to rob you, of your identity in Christ. His mode of operation is to deceive.  "...He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." John 8:44

The Bible says, he walks around like a "roaring lion." He is subtle and sneaky, like the identity thieves I described earlier using tricky methods to steal from you. "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." I Peter 5:8

But, we can counteract his schemes, tricks, lies and traps he lays to lead you away from faith in Christ.   "Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." Ephesians 6:11

Sometimes we aren’t aware of who or how we are being taken advantage of. Or worse, we don’t even know who we are or how we got to where we are. I’ve heard people say, “But I don’t know who I am anymore. I’ve completely lost myself and my identity.” We’ve all been there, but how did we get there. Better still, how do we get away from this place to the place God intended for us to be.

Instead of talking about what we don’t know, we need to focus on what we do know.  We are children of the Most High…

“ For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.  And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. There is no longer Jew or Gentile,[slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.” Galatians 3:26-29

Don't let the thief steal your identity!
