The third factor for success is effort. This of course doesn’t just apply to the gym, it takes effort to become good at anything in life.

Forcing your body to change requires hard work and there is no way around this. Forget machines which ‘tone your muscles’, only concerted and directed effort will get you good results, with the best results coming from heavy strength training.

Now there are legitimate reasons on occasion to back off and not lift to your maximum all the time, but there should still be a degree of serious effort expended while you are training.

Some people go to the gym and do apply effort, but it is not always directed effort, either because of poor exercise choices or poor execution.

Remember, you can have the best programme in the world, but no effort equals no results.
