Psalms 103:8 tells us “The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.” (KJV)

Growing up, many people had fathers who were harsh, sometimes even mean.  To some, surviving their father’s wrath was a difficult task.  It is easy to see how these people would have trouble at first understanding the God of Psalms 103:8.  I was fortunate.  My father allowed me to see his merciful and gracious side.  Because of this I found it easy to relate to a God who cared for me and always wanted to do what was in my best interest.

For those who see God as mean, sitting in heaven waiting to punish them, I would suggest they read all of Psalm 103.  It is only one of the many sections of the Bible that tell us the true character of God, that of a loving Father.  Once we understand this true character, it is easy to speak to Him openly and allow Him to direct our paths.  It becomes easy to trust Him with our lives and the lives of those around us.
