Psalms 89:7 says. “God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.”(KJV)  Wait a minute.  Fear God?  I thought He loved us and we should love Him.  When we understand the meaning of the Hebrew word used here translated as ‘fear’ we can understand what is being said.

The word for fear means to morally revere, or regard with respect and awe, not to tremble under a perceived threat.  He created the universe and all that is in it.  How can we not stand in awe of a God who did that?  How can we not stand in awe of a God who gave His only begotten Son to die on a cross and rise again so that we could spend eternity with Him?

The two halves of the above verse mirror each other.  Fear and reverence go hand in hand.  When we understand who God truly is, what He has done and what He is capable of doing, how can we not stand in awe?  Reverence and fear and show a deep and never ending respect for who He is.
