You will find many articles, forums, and blogs on Fibromyalgia and Selenium.  A compromised immune system is something that those that have Fibromyalgia do deal with, and Selenium can help boost your immune system.

What is selenium?  Selenium is a nutrient that the body needs to stay healthy.  Selenium protects the body from damage caused by free radicals and infection.

What is the difference between inorganic and organic selenium?  The organic source of selenium is a yeast which is more digestible and inorganic selenium (Sodium Selenite).  Organic selenium is absorbed better, and you retain more selenium in your body.

Selenium is found naturally in many foods such as:

  • Seafood
  • Poultry
  • Eggs
  • Dairy
  • Breads
  • Cereals

How do you know if you are getting enough selenium? Most people will get enough from their foods, but those of us that have a chronic illness may have to take a supplement.

If you are deficient in selenium, I can cause Keshan disease (a type of heart disease) and male infertility.  It might also cause Kashin-Beck disease which is a type of arthritis that produces pain, swelling, and loss of motion in your joints.

My doctor prescribed 200 MCG of organic selenium a day to help my immune system as well research has shown that it could help prevent some cancers.  It also helps with my Fibro fog that I do get sometimes.
