All of us face difficulties in our lives. But we can have victory over them if we keep our eyes on God. Sometimes it seems we go from one battle to the next, from one challenge to another. All the great saints of God in the Bible suffered hard times, but they show us how to survive in the difficult times.

When David was going through one of the darkest times of his life he encouraged himself in the Lord. Not many of us have experienced as bad a day as David did when he returned to his home in Ziklag after a journey and discovered that his enemies, the Amalekites had destroyed their city with fire and captured all their wives and children. 1 Samuel 30 They wept until they had no more power to weep. In fact David’s’ men were in such distress they wanted to stone him. Even in this hour of despair, he “encouraged himself in the Lord his God,” and it was then that God showed him what to do (1 Samuel 30:6-18).

This was David’s habit. When he was cast down and in the pits, he would speak to his soul, “Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise Him for the saving help of his presence.” Psalm 42:5 WEB

I encourage you to take your eyes off your problems and fix  them on Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith. It is then that you will hear His voice speaking to you, encouraging you.  It’s not easy and takes discipline. Focusing on the troubles of your life only diverts your attention away from God.

So many of us are trying to handle things on our own, when all God really want’s is for us to trust him.  We must always look to Jesus and focus on Him. The Amplified Bible paints a wonderful picture of this, “Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2 AMP  We have an amazing example in Jesus, who endured the unimaginable to obtain the prize of redemption for us.

Recently I was faced with some very difficult circumstances in my life. What kept me going? My faith in God.  I stopped focusing on my problems and turned my thoughts to Him.  Jonah says in chapter 3,”When I had lost all hope, I turned my thoughts once more to the Lord. And my earnest prayer went to you in your holy Temple. ” Jonah 2:7 TLB

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”

fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. ” Hebrew 12:2 NIV
