Turn off the TV

There is hardly a better way to escape the mental barrage of the day than by relaxing in front of the TV. But, did you know that the blue light emitted by LCDs, HDTVs, and other electronic displays is detrimental to your sleeping habits? These blue lights interfere with the body’s natural circadian rhythm and can upset the sleep cycles. This can lead to tiredness and fatigue the next day.

Rather than zoning out in front of the TV, consider picking up a good book, or even writing in your journal before the end of the day. These activities relax the mind and can help the body to unwind for sleep.

Ditch the phone

The experts suggest shutting off phones for a full hour before bedtime. While using the phone to listen to relaxing music can be a benefit, using the phone to text and send email communications is a bad idea. Exciting games and social media activities can also have this stimulating effect that can make it harder for you to get any good sleep. This will have the same effect as watching TV, it destroys the body’s sleepy time drug “melatonin”.

It would be better to strike up a conversation with your partner before going to sleep. This not only strengthens the relationship but leads to a more restful sleep.

Close the computer

Laptops are so portable and practical you may feel like finishing up the day’s work or getting a head start of tomorrow right in the comfort of your bed, but don’t. Your bed should be kept for sleep and sex, nothing more.

The more you bring other activities into the bed, you will subconsciously make your resting associated with work, relationship concerns and anything other than rest. The funny thing is that many who experience this type of troubled sleep find it easier to move to the couch.

Game over

Video games and computer games in their fascinating variety are very stimulating especially for the mind and they won’t be easily put to rest as soon as you jump into bed.

Even though the hour before bedtime seems like the best time to have an exciting game or two, it could rob you of sweet sleep. It won’t be easy to shut down the console and say “good night” to your gaming buddies but this is an important step in getting a healthier night’s sleep.

Try to engage in activities that promote sleep and rest in the late evening. Gentle stretching of the muscles in a yoga routine is a great way to get the body ready for comfortable repose. Much in the same way, a 20-minute meditation program will allow your mind to release the stress and tension of the day.

Finally when you do crawl into bed make sure that it is comfortable. How old is your mattress? Is it supportive? Take a look at these Tempurpedic mattress reviews and consider investing.
