Words can cut and destroy. James recognised this truth when he stated, “The tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body” (James 3:6). If you want to be self-controlled, begin with your tongue. Stop and think before you react or speak. If you can control this small but powerful member, you can control the rest of your body. (See the chart.) We have all heard the saying the tongue is mightier than the sword. Let me speak from experience. In business, I had 300 people working for me. Many times in communication you say the wrong thing and only after saying it you regret it. My thoughts go to losing your temper, and in that state, you say the wrong thing. Emotion is a very dangerous thing. One can't just act on feelings. Calm down take the time to think about the situation and then speak. What worked for me was to write the important points down. Then stick to that agenda or points. It's much the same as meetings in the workplace, critical to have a agenda. Meetings should be focussed and agenda driven. How many time at home have you said something towards family and loved ones that you regret afterwards? Over the years, I realised that it was easy to lash out at loved ones. At home, there is lots of emotion and therefore easy to lash out. A while ago I made the comment in Bible Study that we should guard our tongues at home the same way we do it at work and other public inter action. Because of manners and courtesy we often don't say the things we think. At home, we let rip. Not cool. It's at home that we should show more patience and courtesy. There we are surrounded by loved ones. They deserve more than all others. Let me say that peace of God you receive when you get saved, helps. Try it. God gave us the ability to choose. So don't be like Adam and Eve and make the wrong choice. That ability to choose gives us the capacity to have Self-Control. Do and say the right thing. "Lord, thank you for choice. Help us make the right decision to Glorify You Lord. Stay in the Word and Your presence. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen."
