Many of our names today have meanings.  My name originally meant advice or protector.  I’m sure that my parents chose it simply because they liked it.  They probably had no knowledge of its meaning.  In ancient times, names were very important.  A name was chosen that would reflect the character of the person.

In the last half of Isaiah 6:9, when foretelling the birth of Christ we are told, “and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (KJV)  All of these words do describe the coming Christ, but they are meant to be more.  He is not just wonderful, He is the embodiment of wonder.  All these names do more than describe Him, they tell us who He is.  He never was meant to be just another baby born over 2000 years ago.  When we envisage Him we need to see all that He is; Wonderful, our Counsellor when we need help, mighty God, everlasting Father and Prince of Peace, all of whom will protect and keep each one of us if we ask.   He came to be our salvation.  That was His Christmas gift to us.
