The latest scientific discovery - Medical Cannabis combats cancer and soothes its undesirable effects!

The material presents evidence that cannabinoids contained in the cannabis plant slow down the development of cancer, inhibit the formation of new cancer cells, destroy cancer cells and help alleviate pain, fatigue, nausea and other adverse effects of cancer.

Cristina Sanchez, a young biologist from the Complutense University of Madrid, has been researching cell metabolism for a long time. She has studied brain cancer cells because they grow faster than normal cells and are therefore useful for research purposes. Cancer cells died every time they were exposed to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive component of the cannabis plant!

Through the insight into the cell function, Sanchez came across anti-cancer properties of THC. In 1998, in a report in the European Journal of Biochemistry, Sanchez published a report which states that THC "causes apoptosis [cell death] of glioma C6 cells", a malignant form of brain cancer.

Successive peer-reviewed studies in several countries show that THC and other medicinal cannabis compounds, known as cannabinoids, are effective not only in relieving cancer symptoms (nausea, pain, loss of appetite, fatigue), but can also have a direct anti-cancer effect.

A team of Spanish scientists, led by Dr. Manuel Guzman, conducted the first clinical trial to evaluate the anti-cancer effects of THC on humans. Guzman administered pure THC through a catheter to nine in-patients with gliomas who didn’t respond to standard brain cancer treatment. The results were published in 2006 in the British Journal of Pharmacology: THC treatment was associated with significantly reduced proliferation of tumor cells in each of the patients studied.

At the same time, Harvard University scientists reported that THC slows down the growth of lung cancer tumors and "significantly reduces the ability of cancer cells to spread. Moreover, THC, like a homing missile, selectively destroys cancer cells and leaves healthy cells unharmed. By comparison, conventional chemotherapeutic drugs are highly toxic; by acting blindly, they can damage both the brain and the body.

According to a report published in the review section of Medicinal Chemistry journal, there is evidence that cannabinoids "represent a new class of anticancer drugs that delay cancer development, inhibit angiogenesis [the creation of new blood vessels to supply blood cells that feed the tumor] and the spread of cancer cells.

Dr. Sean McAllister, a scientist at the Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, has been studying cannabinoid compounds for 10 years in an effort to develop new therapeutic treatments for a variety of cancers. Supported by a grant from the National Institute of Health, McAllister (DEA licensed) has discovered that cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive ingredient found in medical cannabis, is a powerful inhibitor to the proliferation of breast cancer cells, metastases and tumor growth.

In 2007, McAllister published a detailed report on how cannabidiol kills breast cancer cells and destroys malignant tumors by disabling the expression of the ID-1 gene. This protein seems to play an important role as a cancer cell relay.

The ID-1 gene is active during the development of the human embryo, after which it is switched off and remains asleep. However, in the case of breast cancer and other metastatic cancers, the ID-1 gene is activated, causing cancer cell invasion and metastasis. "Dozens of malignant cancers show this gene," McAllister explains. He postulates that CBD, due to its ability to calm down the expression of ID-1, may be a breakthrough when it comes to cancer drugs.

McAllister's lab also analyses how CBD works in conjunction with first-line chemotherapy.

His research shows that cannabidiol is a strong anticancer compound in itself, it works synergistically with various anticancer drugs, cannabidiol strengthens the effect of the drugs, thus reducing the dose of these drugs, which is necessary to achieve the maximum effect.

Researchers at the University of Saint George in London have observed a similar pattern with THC, which increases the effectiveness of conventional antileukemia therapies in preclinical studies.

Both THC and cannabidiol (CBD) induce apoptosis of cells in leukemia cell lines.

At the annual summer conference of the International Society for Cannabinoid Research held this year in Freiburg, Germany, 300 scientists from all over the world are discussing their latest research findings, which show the way towards new strategies for the treatment of cancer and degenerative diseases. Italian researchers describe CBD as the "most effective" apoptosis inductor in prostate cancer. According to British researchers at Lancaster University, it is the most effective apoptosis inductor for both cannabidiol and colorectal cancer.
