Global warming is real, the sea levels are rising and sadly plastic is destroying so much of our beautiful sea life and creatures.

Did you know starting with small changes you can help to make the planet more green and play your part for an eco-friendly world?

The best place to start is where you spend most of your time, your home. Whether you live in a small, affordable Milwaukee apartment or a penthouse in New York City, here are 7 steps to start you on the right path.

1) Ditch the plastic

This goes without saying, all the big restaurants and retailers are starting to remove plastic straws and bags so be sure to do the same within your home. Good alternatives include bamboo which is reusable and sturdy or simply no straws. Invest in some stainless steel glasses and drink without needing them.

As for shopping bags there's no excuse for plastic, you can purchase green bags, recyclable, organic cotton is a popular choice as they can carry a heavy load. Be sure to always pack a spare bag when making the trip to town to avoid needing plastic bags.

2) Preserve water

We are suffering a drought and it is getting steadily worse. You can help by shortening your shower time and avoiding baths if possible, it's a waste of a lot of water for a simple task. Cut down to 5 minutes in the shower and never leave the water running. You can do the same when brushing your teeth, turn of the faucet until its needed.

3) Wash your clothes in a more eco friendly way

On the topic of preserving water, did you ever think about how much you waste while washing your clothes? Make the process easier by always setting your machine to a cold wash. It's less pressure and your doing your part to not waste it. Also be sure to always fill your washing machine up, don't do smaller loads and wait for it to fill up.

4) Check your appliances

In terms of energy efficiency and consider making the switch on the products you use most of all. For example, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers and fridges all carry labels that specify their energy ratings. You can save money on your power usage, and do your bit for the environment at the same time.

5) LED lights are a must have for every home

They consume a lot less energy and they remain cold. No fear of overheating or exploding from overuse. There is even an option to control certain variations and to dim them to your liking by using your phone. Perfect way to set the right ambience in all the rooms.

6) Second hand furniture

There is nothing wrong with some vintage decor in your apartment. It saves a trip to the landfill and you can pick up some great bargains. Check out your local charity shops or magazines for people who want to give their old furniture a new home.

7) Don't waste food

Only buy what you intend on consuming, also what about ditching meat a few times a week for vegetarian options? It will be better for your body and the environment. Plus its an excellent way to get children into healthier food choices.
