This tutorial will show you how to start a website by yourself. It is intended for the beginner, taking you step by step through the whole process from the very beginning.

Find a domain name

The first thing you need to do before anything else is to get yourself a domain name. This is the name you want to give to your website. For example, the domain name of the website you're reading is "". To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. Examples of registrars are and Getting a name does not get you a website or anything like that. It's just a name. It's sort of like registering a business name in the brick-and-mortar world; having that business name does not mean that you also have the shop premises to go with it.

Choosing a web host

A web host is basically a company that has many computers connected to the Internet. When you place your web pages on their computers, everyone in the world will be able to connect to it and view them. You will need to sign up for an account with a web host so that your website has a home. If getting a domain name is analogous to getting a business name in the brick-and-mortar world, getting a web hosting account is comparable to renting office or shop premises for your business. After you sign up for a web hosting account, you will need to point your domain to that account on your web host. To do this, you change your DNS 'A' record.

To get you started, you can visit DigitalOcean if you plan on using Linux or GearHost if you are choosing a Windows environment (use these links to get US$10 in free credits).

Build your website

Once you have settled your domain name and web host, the next step is to build the website itself. If you are intending to blog or maintain a simple website, you can install WordPress or any other CMS like Joomla! or Drupal. WordPress has many free themes to style your website and many recommend it for beginners. For more advanced websites, you will have to either build it yourself or hire web developers to do it for you.

Get your site indexed

Whenever you create a new website or blog, the first thing you probably want to happen is have people find it. So how can you get your new website discovered by the Google or Bing? You submit a sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools or such. If you don’t already have one, simply create a free Google Account by clicking here. Once done, you add your new site and sitemap. For extra credit, create an account with Bing here. To learn more, read our blogging tips for beginners here.
