Did you know that more than two thirds of people living in the United States are overweight? And that one third of them is considered obese?

That’s a frightening statistic to be sure. But it gets worse. Half of all American children will have diabetes in their life, a third will have Type II diabetes, a third will have some form of cancer, and a fifth will deal with some sort of autoimmune disease.

And while this looks bad for the Americans, the rest of the world isn’t that far off either.

So What’s Happening?

Obviously we’re failing at taking care of people. But why is that? What’s happening to make things so bad?

Part of the problem is that we’re relying on medical doctors entirely for our health care needs. But medical doctors focus only on one part of health, known as allopathic reductionism. In general, the main goal of the medical profession is to keep diseases under control with prescription drugs rather than to cure them.

But allopathic reductionism is only one part of the medical spectrum, and is only really good at dealing with trauma and surgery. Beyond that, there are many other kinds of medicine with just as much validity, including osteopathy, naturopathy, chiropractic, homeopathy, and many more.

Sadly, though, curing a disease isn’t a good business model. If you can get someone to buy your pill for the rest of their life, you’ll make more money than if you cured their disease and they walked away healthy.

But since most health insurance plans only cover medical doctors, the media only ever talks about medical doctors, and national health care programs only cover medical doctors, we only know about them. We don’t know about the other options.

But these other options can make the difference between illness and health.

Is Modern Western Medicine Failing Us?

For practitioners of non-allopathic medicine, it’s evident that we need to address the actual cause of the disease rather than just throwing pills at it and hoping for the best.

Modern epigenetic research is showing us that while we can’t change our DNA, we can still change the way our environment triggers our DNA through adjusting environmental conditions.

In other words, we can take control of our own health.

Here are three elements of health you can use to combat illness and live a healthier, happier life.

1. Your Physical Body

The average person today spends 21 hours of the day either sitting or lying down. As a result, we aren’t getting as much exercise as we need.

Today’s lifestyles have led to chronic back pain, weight problems, and many different chronic illnesses. But we can get around this by just getting exercise.

And while some people believe that exercise means lifting weights at the gym or running a marathon, in truth exercise can be whatever you want it to be. So long as you’re moving your body, you’re exercising. And you’re taking steps toward becoming healthier.

2. The Food You Eat

Food can either kill you slowly, or heal you slowly.

If your diet is filled with junk food, like it is for many people today, you saw the statistics at the beginning of this article. You know how bad it can be.

Fill your diet with whole foods, and you can never go too far wrong.

Organic fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts can give you everything you need for a healthy diet.

3. The Thoughts You Think

You can exercise all you want, and eat all the healthiest foods, but if your mind is still a toxic place you won’t get very far.

Mental stress is a bigger issue than it has ever been. Partially due to the toxic influence of mass media, we’ve been facing more fear and anxiety than ever. It wears us down, divides us, and makes us easier to control. And when fear controls us, we cannot love.

That’s why it’s more important than ever to control the information that comes in to your life and choose a more loving path.

Make Your Choice

With a healthy mind, a healthy body, and a healthy diet, you can’t help but thrive. Any illness that comes your way will only slow you down temporarily – it won’t stop you.

Making the choice to live a healthier, happier lifestyle is within each of us. So now it's up to you to make the decision.
