We know that as God followers or as we are known, believers, we are “engraved upon the palm of God’s hands.” However, Jeremiah says our hearts are a different story. It is full of sin and in fact, a diamond tip has recorded our sin, not upon God’s hands, but upon the tablet of our hearts.  He pinpointed the source; the deceitfulness of our hearts. “For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.” [Gal 6] Not only is our heart deceived but it is also desperately wicked unlike the message of the world which says: you are good. Jesus reminded the rich young ruler that there is no one good but God. The bottom line is this; we are all in a “whole lotta trouble” when it comes to our hearts.

The source of our sin lies in our minds. We fail to remember God and His Word and replace it with altars and idols because we consider ourselves wise in our own eyes. We are prone to think more highly of ourselves yet “The Lord knows the thoughts of man” and he knows our hearts. We need a heart transplant and it begins when we allow Him to enter our hearts and change us from the inside out so that our “delight is in the law of the Lord and in his law he meditates day and night.”

“Do we cling to the myth of our own perfectibility, or do we reckon our old self crucified with Christ…?”  [Ray Stedman]
