It is expedient we know that we are not saved by works but by grace through faith and so we cannot boast in our works (Ephesians 2:8) for we all struggle with sin. Our works can never be good enough to save us, the bible says in Isaiah 64:6 that our righteousness is like a filthy rag in the sight of God so then we say that it is just by grace (a gift of God) that we are saved.

Once we have our faith hooked to Jesus, it generates a working attitude in us. So the by-product of faith is good works, meaning, you cannot have faith without it leading or causing you to work. If it is not happening, then there is something wrong.

Claiming you have faith and yet you have no works to prove the reality of your faith is deception to yourself, people around you and most importantly God. A faith that saves is a faith that works. But the faith that saves is not of human origin, it is a gift from God, It is not the works that saves but the faith that works is the faith that saves. So you do not have to just speak faith you must do faith. (1 Thessalonians 1:2-3)

To be sure, not every Christian has the same degree of faith; those who invest more receive more and are stronger. It is important that each professing Christian, examine his or her own heart and life, and make sure that they possess true saving faith. Satan is the great deceiver; one of his devices is imitation, if he can convince a person that counterfeit faith is true faith, then he has that person in his power!

Now let us delve into the kinds of faith as written in James 2:14-26.

  1. Dead Faith (James 2:14-17)

This faith substitutes words with deeds. We can have this faith but it cannot save because it is based on intellect. Supposing a brother or sister is in dire need of food or clothing and you tell this person, God will provide, so do not worry, without actually yielding yourself for God to use you to change the person’s situation then what good have you done by uttering such words? Any declaration of faith that does not result in a changed life and good works is a false declaration:  A DEAD FAITH! This happens, if our WALK does not measure up to our TALK! And our WORKS do not measure up to our WORDS!

  1. Demonic Faith (James 2:18-19)

The thought of demons having faith and they trembling at the truth that there is only one God is scary. This faith is based on Intellect and emotions. Being a Christian is about receiving and revealing the life of God. People who possess this faith know the truth but cannot act on it because it was not received from God and they just show this by their emotions for a moment.

  1. Dynamic Faith (James 2:20-26)

This is the faith that saves. The one from God (Romans 10:17). Dynamic Faith involves the mind, emotions and will.

  • The MIND understands the truth
  • The HEART desires and rejoices in the truth
  • The WILL acts upon the truth

True, saving faith, then, LEADS TO ACTION.

  • It is not intellectual contemplation.
  • It is not emotionalism.
  • It is that which leads to obedience in doing good works.

Abraham was considered righteous not by faith alone but by offering his son Isaac on the altar, so his faith was made complete by what he did.

Finally as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

God bless us all.

Father in the name of Jesus, thank you for the gift of life. Please forgive my sins as i have forgiven those who sinned against me. Wash me clean Lord that all i do will be accepted by you. Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. Develop in me the true saving faith that will lead me into doing good works, in Jesus’ name have i prayed with thanks giving, Amen.
