Justice & righteousness over sacrifice Like 0 Twitter Luke Harmer Follow July 11, 2016, 2:22 p.m. in Religion Views: 801 Like us on facebook Originally posted at https://lukeharmerblog.wordpress.com/ Yesterday morning while I was sitting in church, I picked up the word and felt called to read proverbs, one of my favorite books in the old testament. I love how it’s a book that even non Christians can apply to their lives with ease, “The wise store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.” (proverbs 10:14) is a good example of this. It’s a book full of messages that anyone can apply to their lives. However, this isn’t the verse I want to focus on in this post. The verse I’m going to be focusing on in this blog is Proverbs 21:3 “To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.” Now, what made me want to write about this verse over all the others I could have chosen from this wonderful book of wisdom? Well, this verse really struck me as a call to the modern Christian, allow me to elaborate! Something I noticed about my Prayer life is that, I spend more time worrying about what i need to give up rather than what Jesus gave up for us. That’s not to say we shouldn’t worry about our sin, even though Jesus died to free us from sin, I’m more referring to this idea that we need to focus on bettering ourselves rather than seeking the righteousness of the Lord. We are called to be the body of Christ on earth, this is an amazing honor, we get to help bring the kingdom of God to the people of this world! But sometimes I really feel like we get caught up in this idea that we need to sacrifice everything in our lives in order to do that. Now I want to make one thing very clear about this, in Matthew 4:19 it does say“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” the context of this being that the disciples were fishermen before they met Jesus, and they had to give up everything to follow him, this isn’t what I mean when I’m talking about sacrifice. This is giving up everything in order to follow Jesus, and this we still need to do, I’m more referring to sacrifice for the sake of sacrifice, this idea that because we’ve given something up that we don’t need to help the other members of the body. This sounds like a foolish attitude, “Why give something up for no real reason?” well that’s exactly the problem, we get so caught up on trying to make ourselves perfect and sinless that we just sacrifice everything, sometimes even our growth in faith. What I take out of the verse from proverbs isn’t “don’t ever give anything up, because the lord would rather you be righteous and see justice prevail” but more a question of “are you sacrificing everything to follow Jesus, or are you just doing it because you feel you have to?” I take this verse to mean that The Lord would rather have a heart that wants to see his righteousness and glory spread to the world rather than give things up just because you feel like God may be angry if you don’t. By all means repent of your sin, and if something is getting in the way of relationship with Jesus, remove it from your life, but we have the privilege of having a God that will always love us, so if you’re thinking about giving something up, just think “Am i doing this because i don’t want to upset God? Or am i doing this because it’s in the way of my relationship with Jesus?” If you have any ideas for future topics, please leave a comment, thank you for reading, and may God bless you.
