Peanut butter can get pricey — especially if you’re buying organic, gourmet, super-delux peanut butter from Whole Foods.  Plus, there can be a lot of weird added ingredients (like hydrogenated oil — what even is that?)

Making your own nut-butter is surprisingly easy.  And if you’re feeling creative, you can make just about any flavor you like!  Below is the simple way to make your own peanut butter PLUS some recipes for a “fancier” version.

Let’s get food-processin’!

What you’ll need:

  1. Peanuts/Almonds/Cashews/Walnuts…
    1. Pick your favorite nut!
    2. I recommend buying roasted nuts versus raw, as the “roasting” process tends to give you a more flavorful nut-butter.
      1. If you’re finding that pre-roasted nuts have added salt and oil, never fear.  You can buy raw nuts and roast them in the oven yourself!  Very simple.
  2. Food processor
  3. Add-ins (optional)

What you do:

  1. Add your nuts to a food-processor and BLEND!
  2. That’s it.  Seriously.  Just give it a few minutes — it WILL get creamy, I promise.
    1. Side note: if you’re using cashews, you might have to add a little oil because it is a low-fat nut!

Make it fun:

Dark Chocolate Almond Butter

  1. Add 1-2 tbsp cocoa powder + 1 tbsp honey/agave/sugar to the food processor when blending almonds.

Vanilla Almond Butter

  1. Add 1 tsp vanilla extract + 1 tsp brown sugar to the food processor when blending almonds.  Optional: add vanilla beans from 1 vanilla pod.

Coconut Cashew Butter

  1. Add 1/2 tbsp coconut oil + 2 tbsp shredded coconut to the food processor when blending cashews.

Honey Peanut Butter

  1. Add 1-2 tbsp honey to the food processor when blending peanuts.  Note: honey tastes best & has the most antioxidants when it’s local.

Brown Sugar Maple Peanut Butter

  1. Add 1 tbsp brown sugar + 1 tbsp pure maple syrup to the food processor when blending peanuts.

I hope you give these recipes a try!
