Lately, I have come to realize that my internal clock is off and that I need to make a change to my bedtime routine. It’s at the point that I joke that I am running on Australian time; I am regularly going to bed at 5am. The night has become my day, and the day has become my night.

So, with that in mind, I thought that this would be an opportune time to write about my new evening/bedtime routine.

  • Evening walk – An evening walk helps me achieve two things: 1) It forces me to get outside; thus allowing me to confront my agoraphobia. 2) Allows me to burn out my extra energy before winding down for the night.
  • Warm shower – I love taking a shower before bed. I enjoy the sensation of going to bed with damp hair; I find it strangely calming.
  • Brush my teeth
  • Get cozy in my pajamas
  • Herbal tea – I love a steaming cuppa before bed; I prefer either Cold 911 or Sweet Dreams tea (both from DAVIDsTEA).
  • Read – I have always loved to read, especially before bed. Currently, I am reading The Distant Hours by Kate Morton
  • Lights out – Ultimately, I hope to achieve lights out between 10 – 11pm.

So, there my routine that I have established, and that I intend to adhere to; I am currently on day three. However, given the state of my last routine, it will take some time to reset my clock.

What helps you power down at night? Leave me a note in the comments.
