I tend to not regret much, but when I do regret something, I regret it hard.

What was I thinking? How could I ever be so dumb?

And most of the time when I regret something (actually, pretty much all of the time) it’s something I didn’t do.

I didn’t strike up a conversation with that boy.

I didn’t send my old friend sympathy for the death of her loved one.

It’s all things I’ve thought about doing, but just, didn’t.

And then when the time is gone, I realize I really should have done what I thought to do in the first place.

One time years ago I heard the quote, “It is better to live a life of ‘Oh Wells’ than ‘What if’s,’” and it’s been my favorite quote ever since. Honestly, what do you have to lose? It only took me one boy who didn’t answer my text to realize I was better off dealing with that small pang of rejection that went away after a day, then to not have texted him at all and waste time in the future dwelling on what might have been if I had shot that three worded text to him.

And although I do not follow that rule all the time (obviously), I still think it’s the best mentality to have. Life is too short to not embarrass yourself or fail. If things don’t go your way, at least you get a good story out of it, right?
