If you’re a budding entrepreneur with plans for your own business, you might be under the impression that every great business needs to be a tech startup. After all, there are so many great tech startups that are booming in 2019.   

However, not every startup needs to be a tech startup. There are still many other career industries out there where you can develop your own business. All you need to do is find an area where there is a need. For example, Austral Wright Metals realized there was a need for an aluminum supplier in Australia, so they were able to start their own business.  

What is a startup?

The term “startup” has become increasingly popular over the last few years. It’s typically associated with tech companies, but that doesn’t mean every startup needs to be a tech company. To be considered a startup, a company needs to be working towards a solution to a problem. However, sometimes the solution isn’t always obvious.

While most startups will use some form of technology to help solve a problem, that doesn’t mean it’s a tech startup. A tech startup specifically creates new technology products or services.

What are some examples of non-tech startups?

There’s actually quite a few! While you’ll notice some of these do leverage technology, their primary purpose is to provide a service or product. Just because a company has a website or an online ordering system does not make it a tech startup.

Airbnb

Airbnb’s primary purpose is to provide a service that allows individuals to arrange lodging or tourism experiences. Yes, they do rely on a website to make this happen, but their website is considered a delivery service that allows their business to grow.

Shake Shack

Shake Shack started as a hot dog stand in Manhattan to support Madison Square Park Conservancy’s first art installation. After it was a great success, the Shack turned into a permanent kiosk. They serve a range of treats, including burgers, hot dogs, and drinks.

Scrub Daddy

Scrub Daddy is rethinking the sponge. The company introduced a sponge in the shape of a smiley face that changes its texture. It stays soft in warm water and firm in cold water. It is also odor-resistant for 8 weeks, safe to use on any surface, and dishwasher safe.

How can a non-tech startup be successful?

One of the biggest reasons most tech startups are so successful these days are because they can quickly reach a huge range of people. In order to make a non-tech startup successful, you have to gain traction within a community.

Know what your goals are

Before you even begin forming your startup, know what your goals are. Start with a general goal (“I want to make money to pay off my loans”) and then break it down into smaller goals. Think about how you can achieve your goals and what steps you need to take.

Build a following

Once you know what your product is and what your goals are, you can begin gaining a following of people. Gaining a following is necessary because you need people that will want to buy your products.

Start telling people what your product can do for them. Offer pre-orders or special discounts. Make them want to order your product before your product is even available.

Networking is crucial. Reach out to people who would be willing to advertise your product. Talk to people who are using competitive products. Find out what people really want.

Form partnerships

As your business begins to grow, you’ll need to figure out potential business partners. A great business partner will support your ideas. They might even have products that complement your own products.

With a business partner, you can cross-market products, promote your brand, and develop collaborations.

You’ll want to carefully consider all business partners. These relationships can be complex, but if done correctly, your business will take off.

Advertise your product

Even if you already have a following of people using your product, you’ll want to eventually start advertising to a larger network of individuals. Create original content on your social media accounts or on your blog. You can also consider other forms of advertising, such as a radio commercial.

Add a technical partner

Once your product is really taking off, you’ll want to start thinking about making a website or building an app. Websites and apps help promote your brand and extend your market. Remember, just because a startup is using a website or app to sell products does not mean the startup is a tech startup.
